Robbie tore through the auditorium door with Nitsy by his side. Momentarily blinded, it took him a second to understand what was going on. The brightness of outside clashed with the dark room where his peers were watching a film on a giant screen. Through squinted eyes, Robbie saw John F. Kennedy standing at a podium delivering a speech. It was a leadership film, probably meant to keep the kids busy while he and Nitsy searched the school for their missing classmates. Only they werenât missing.
Theyâre zombies.
With the sunlight at his back and the door closing behind him, cutting a slice of daylight through the darkness, Robbie saw quite a few teenagers looking his way. The sudden normalcy of the scene in front of him made him doubt what heâd just experienced. Like Eliasâs fall and broken neck might have been all in his imagination.
âStop the movie!â Nitsy yelled.
She stood at his side. He hadnât even noticed her there, but her voice thundered through the auditorium with the command of a great leader. She demanded everyoneâs attention. He needed to do the same.
âStop the movie!â he yelled, mirroring her authority.
An adult might have handled the situation differently, but he wasnât one, and he had no idea how to deal with a zombie apocalypse. With Robbieâs outburst, the rest of the kids watching the movie gasped and turned to look at him.
âLock the doors,â Nitsy said, going back to the entrance and searching for a way to secure them.
Eggo, who Robbie knew was the leader of Nitsyâs group, joined her at the door.
âNitsy, whatâs going on?â he asked.
Voices went up all around him, and Robbie felt faint. None of this made sense. This was scary movie shit. This wasnât the kind of thing that happened to teenagers in real life.
âHe⦠uh⦠heâ¦â Robbie tried to explain when Mrs. Price made her way over to him and grabbed hold of his shoulders.
âCalm down,â she said, âand tell me what happened.â
âHe broke his neck,â he finally found his voice. âHe broke his own neck.â
Mrs. Price put a hand to her mouth and stared at him. She looked over at Nitsy. âWhat is he talking about?â She was nervous. âDid someone get hurt?â
âMrs. Price,â Nitsy took over, and Robbie was so thankful she did because he didnât think he could explain it in a way that made sense. âSomething has happened to the missing kids. Theyâre⦠theyâre likeââ
âZombies!â Robbie announced. âElias and Bianca and who knows how many others. Theyâre zombies.â
One of the wisecracking boys Robbie had never had the pleasure of speaking to was seated nearby. As soon as he heard the word zombie he burst out in laughter and stomped his feet on the carpet in extreme exaggeration. Like he might laugh himself to death.
âDid you hear this kid?â the boy asked. âHe said theyâre zombies. Zombies, man!â
A few others laughed. Some of the kids in the crowd were afraid. They werenât saying much. Robbie felt his blood boiling as the boy continued heckling him.
