If you pick up one of the hundreds of books that have been written about divorce, you will find every aspect discussed at length—except for the division of “stuff.” In an informal survey of books on divorce, the fate of the house itself and the financial assets were thoroughly covered, but the division of day-to-day possessions was ignored. One book, written for women, focused on how to manipulate the process to “get it all,” but none addressed the emotional process of sorting out the physical effects of two merged lives.

One complication, of course, is that every relationship is different. Some divorces are mutual; others are hotly contested and brimming with bitterness. Even when there is agreement, the months around the split can be volcanic, spewing out all sorts of buried emotions and regrets. The decisions made at that time are not always sound.
