Bryan sat in the lab at the University of Hong Kong the next day, smiling to himself as he remembered details from the night before. They had taken it slow, just as he’d suggested, though now he was questioning the reasoning of that decision. He still felt her lips on his and had to shake the memory away so he could focus on the work in front of him. He was here to do research. And change the world!

His phone buzzed beside him. He picked it up and an involuntary smile crept right back onto his face. It was Iris. They bantered back and forth for a few minutes before he heard someone clear their throat in the lab.

“Something funny happening?” his colleague, Jeff, asked.

“Ah.” Bryan looked up and placed his phone facedown on his desk. “I’m, uh, catching up on a few things. Let’s get started, shall we?”

Though he did manage to get through the day, and even be productive, his mind was never far from Iris. It was his turn to plan the next thing on their list, and he’d grown increasingly concerned about his money situation. He had the dinner coming up, but wouldn’t get paid until afterwards, and he still had ingredients to buy in order to practice his dessert. The expensive evening from Aqua Luna and the ten course dinner was on his credit card and he’d have to pay that off before he knew it. What could he suggest that didn’t cost anything?

He looked to Jeff. “Hey, what’s something cheap to do in Hong Kong that not many people know about?” He knew it was a long shot. Jeff spent his hours outside of the lab gaming. According to him, he was actually pretty good at it, but Bryan wasn’t sure Iris would be up for a video game convention.

Jeff pushed his wire-rimmed glasses up his nose. “Tai O,” he said, and looked back at his water samples.

“Tai O? How do you spell that?” Bryan asked, knowing an internet search would yield more information than his quiet lab partner.

“T-A-I-O. It’s a fishing village.”

Bryan typed it into his search bar and up popped pictures of an old fishing village with homes on stilts. After scrolling, he also saw that it was a place you could see the very rare white dolphin. “Whoa, have you ever seen this white dolphin?”

Jeff nodded. “Twice.”

“Thanks, man. This is a great idea.” Bryan took the hint and stopped asking questions of Jeff, concentrating his inquiries to the web. “Wait, the dolphins are pink?” Bryan asked a few minutes into his research. Jeff didn’t even look up.

“Got it, I’ll find out when I’m there,” Bryan said to himself. After deciding that Tai O was the place to go, he planned their whole day. Chances of seeing the dolphins were better in the daytime, so he’d wait until Saturday. It was a bummer he couldn’t see Iris until then, but his wallet would appreciate the reprieve. Even if they took the metro to the little village, he would have to pay for the boat tour to guarantee a pink dolphin sighting.
