Chapter 15

After we’d dressed again and I’d explained my adventures, Greg told me about his. They were largely desk-based; he’d been pulling strings all day, speaking to solicitors to get the papers drawn up as quickly as possible and delivered here. He dug out the transfer form, which I signed and he witnessed.

‘I’ll get it couriered to the Land Registry tonight,’ he said. ‘I’ve got someone waiting to action it tomorrow.’

‘Fingers crossed this is the last night we’re vulnerable.’

‘We’ve got the runes,’ he pointed out.

‘Yeah, I’d forgotten about those. That’s something – but we can’t forget there’s a black witch running around. One who needs unicorn blood, apparently.’

‘She’s probably planning to kidnap more children to do who knows what.’

‘Exactly.’

‘She’s still on my to-do list,’ Greg said.

‘Amber has run down alibis for her coven. So far they all check out, though she says one or two of them are shaky. I’ve suggested she gets Jess on board – at least then we’ll know for sure if anyone is lying.’

‘Good idea. I also heard back from Fritz.’

My mind went temporarily blank. What had we wanted with our computer wizard Fritz? Greg interpreted my vacant stare. ‘We sent him one of the USBs Mark Oates had compiled on the council members.’

‘Oh right, of course! Did he get anything useful from it?’

‘He got a whole file. It was called Number 2, and it was about one council member in particular.’

‘Who?’

‘Scott Larsden.’

Scott was the council member who’d interviewed us after Ace’s so-called disappearance. ‘But he seemed so nice!’ I objected.

‘That should have been our first clue,’ Greg said grimly. ‘The council members aren’t light and fluffy. He was entirely too agreeable.’

‘You think he was checking that we were ignorant of his involvement?’

‘Bingo. He was making sure he could tidy up any loose ends that Ace and Mark might have left.’

‘He thinks we never found the blackmail material,’ I speculated.

‘Exactly.’

‘What’s in the file?’

‘Sex, drugs⎯’

‘And rock and roll?’

‘No. Sex, drugs and cash. Fritz chased the money and found they were black tourney payments. Tracking the cash through shell corporations was what took him so long. He said they’d done a good job muddying the trail.’

‘But not good enough to hide it from Fritz.’

Greg smiled proudly. ‘Nah, there’s not much that gets past him. From what Fritz found out, Larsden regularly received sizeable lump sums. He’s already cross-referenced some of the references that came with the payments – and they always had two or three letters.’

‘Initials?’ I suggested, thinking of what I used on my spreadsheets to keep track of my clients.

‘Exactly. Fritz cross-referenced them with the list of loners in the UK, and the initials matched up. I think Larsden handed over the loners to Ghost as contestants in the tourneys.’

Ghost is Bastion’s daughter, Charlize, and she was the one who ran the black tourneys. Bastion had assured us that they’d been shut down for good, but Greg had heard rumours that they were starting up again, run by someone else this time. Bastion had sworn that Charlize was out of the game, and I believed him.
