CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

JESS RUSHED INTO the school, hopefully before anyone saw her. They’d said to stay out, but if the rescue crew wasn’t going to find her son, she’d do it herself. She was a strong, independent woman. She could do this.

Some decisions she could agonize over for days, taking an exorbitant amount of time to make her choice. Others, like this, were made almost without any deliberation at all. This was pure instinct.

Physically, she couldn’t wait any longer. Mentally, she knew it might not be the best choice, but that part had been overridden by the emotional part of her crying out that now wasn’t the time to be logical. Now was the time for action.

“Jess,” Beckett’s voice called behind her. “What are you doing?”

Busted. She kept walking though. He could come with her or leave her be. She wasn’t at his beck and command. Even if she’d accepted him taking the lead earlier, he wasn’t her boss and he couldn’t order her back like a wayward subordinate. Or sweet-talk her back either. She thought he was more likely to try the latter of those options. And she wasn’t falling for either. She needed to find her son.

The inside of the school looked a lot like the emergency department had that morning. Glass shards littered the floor and insulation hung from the ceiling. At least in the spots that still had a ceiling. Some of the hallway was open to the blue sky.

“Jess, wait!” He caught up with her, grabbing her hand and tugging her to a stop. “This isn’t a good idea.”

“You’re not going to stop me.” She yanked her hand away and crossed her arms over her chest. Righteous determination filled her, and she rose up as tall as her petite frame would allow. “The only way you’re getting me out of here is to carry me, and I’ll be fighting you the whole way.”

Beckett raised a brow at her. “You think I’m not capable of doing just that?”

Jess couldn’t stop her eyes from traveling the length of his frame, taking in his broad shoulders and clearly toned chest. He absolutely could cart her out of here over his shoulder like a fireman. She swallowed hard at the images that carved into her mind. In another place, another time, she might not be opposed to the man going alpha on her and carrying her off to somewhere private. He was one-hundred-percent capable of taking her away from this wreck of a building.

A rush of panic that he might do just that rose up and she swallowed it back. Surely, he wouldn’t take her away from her son when she was this close. “Maybe you can. I’m hoping that you won’t though,” she finally admitted.

He shook his head but didn’t move to touch her. Even after spending the day with him, she had no idea what his thought process was like. The only thing she was sure of was that she’d been so far off on her estimation of him that it was like she knew nothing.
