“I can probably handle that.” I scoop up my briefs and pants. Eli crawls out into the hallway toward the kitchen as I pull on my clothes. “Hey kiddo, where are you going?”

He babbles something. I scramble to get my pants up and follow him before he does something… whatever kids do.

In the ER I’ve seen beans up noses. Swallowed earrings. Swallowed disk batteries—that can be fatal. All kinds of mishaps. That is so not happening on my watch.

Eli tries to climb into his chair, I lift him and set him into the seat and fasten the tray in front of him. “Guess you’re hungry.”

“Ungh.” He replies and points his finger at his mouth.

I chuckle, “That I can understand. I do the same thing when I want food.”

Eli’s cereal is in a bowl and there’s a little plate of cut up fruit. “Here goes nothing…” I mutter.

The kid promptly sticks his hand in the cereal and smears it on his face.
