Chapter 6

Jac brought Charlotte with him as he approached Garrett who was going over her living room with a fine-tooth comb, otherwise known as an electronic bug detector. Garrett pushed her towards the kitchen with his finger to his lips. Charlotte couldn’t believe Jac and Garrett left her standing there instead of including her but as she processed what was going on, she could see why he was also indicating she should be quiet. She nodded and walked into the kitchen to begin clearing things up.

Mark took Jac outside and spoke to him. “We’ve found cameras wired for sound in the living room and the hallway so far. We need to sweep in the bedroom and bathroom but maybe even out here. Honestly, I wonder if it wasn’t here before we put our equipment up.”

“No, we did our own sweep beforehand. Are you sure these aren’t the ones we put up?”

“Nope because I identified our one in the kitchen going into the living area and ours don’t activate unless the alarm goes off.”

“These are on continuously?”

“Yup.”

“Do you think in the early days, Sharlee could have let someone else in thinking they were part of us?”

“Damn smart on their part if that’s the case but that then begs the question, how did they know? She is closed mouthed, normally.”

“Good point. I’ll ask her after she’s gone from the apartment. You and Garrett finish here. Shut it all down and then put our camera on continual feed until we decide how to proceed.”

“Gotcha, boss.” Mark went inside as Garrett stepped out. Jac stopped to talk to him.

“What’s up? I have Mark pulling their cameras and then putting ours on continuous. I think we should probably add an additional lock.”

“Sounds good.” Garrett paused for a moment as though deciding how he would ask the question. “You and Sharlee, you’re good? I mean…”

“Are we together? Yes. And we will be good together when things settle down. We’ll have issues, and I imagine Sharlee will have plenty of reasons to complain more often than not, about certain… of her parts.

Garrett chuckled. “Yeah, it will be difficult for all of us in the beginning. That woman does like her freedom and control. What do you say I take lead on this one then? It’s important to keep a clear head. Better for you and safer for her… parts.”

Jacquard laughed. “Agreed.”

The men returned inside, Garrett to talk to Mark and Jac to gather Sharlee. Speaking low and forcing her to do the same, he directed her packing. “Grab what you need for a while. Anything personal you need to keep, grab it too because you won’t be back soon.”

“But why?” she whispered back.

“We can talk when we’re in the car.”

“Jac, what about my computer in the safe? We haven’t opened it yet.”

“I know. Finish. Any prints Mark could’ve gotten are lifted. I’ll stand over you so the combination isn’t compromised more in case we haven’t gotten all the cameras. This is the one time I wish you had a smaller apartment.
