CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Bogey and Javier were at Stefan’s door before the sun even peeked over the horizon. After a mostly sleepless night, he wasn’t in the best frame of mind when he opened the door to their smiling faces.

“Go away—unless you brought coffee.”

Javier held up the cardboard carrier that had been obscured by Bogey’s body. “Got your racing fuel right here, my man.”

“Hallelujah! Gimme.”

With a laugh, Mozart handed over the carrier, and the two men followed Stefan into his room.

“What’s going on?” Bogey folded his tall frame onto a chair, while Javier remained standing, leaning against the wall by the door. Stefan passed each a cup before parking his backside on the corner of the bed.

“Sully was able to backtrack the camera feed from Savannah’s backyard. It went to an apartment building in Thousand Oaks. I had one of the Los Angeles C.S.S. team head over and check it out, but the place had been cleared out. Wiped clean as a whistle, not even fingerprints left behind.”

“You still thinking it’s Aristides?”

Stefan’s eyes met Bogey’s. “My gut says yes. Even with all his assets seized or frozen, he still has enough offshore funds to live in luxury for the rest of his life. But I think he wants to come back, retake his position as the major player in New Orleans. To do that, he needs to eliminate the only person who can link him to a homicide, and who’s willing to testify—Savannah.”

“The man’s got a huge pair of cajones, I’ll give him that.” Javier added, taking a sip of his coffee.

“Celeste and Frankie are going to head over and spend some time with Anna this morning. Benny pulled guard duty last night, watching the house. Didn’t see anything.”

“Not surprising. I imagine the old man’s getting a kick out of terrorizing her. I appreciate you all stepping up, helping to watch over Savannah. Takes a load off me, so I can concentrate on cyberstalking the S.O.B.” Stefan drained the rest of the coffee and tossed the paper cup.

“Better you than me. I leave all the computer work to Sully.”

Stefan grinned. “Don’t blame you, the guy’s good.”

“We’re more than willing to help bodyguard your gal,” Javier shot a glance at Bogey before he continued, “unless we get called up on a mission. In that case, we’ve got no choice but to go wheels up.”

“Understood. Wouldn’t expect anything else.” Stefan gave the man a brief nod.

“Carpenter got somebody watching her sister?” Bogey asked.

“Twenty-four seven. Ranger and Sarah are covered by the elite team back in New Orleans. We figured Aristides might think taking out Savannah’s sister would be a priority, because nothing would hurt her more. Except maybe eliminating her parents. I think that may be one of his objectives, but I’m figuring he wants a little reign of terror over her first. To watch her terror ratchet up before he makes his killing blow.”

“That’s one twisted freak, man.”

Stefan bit back a laugh at Javier’s assessment, though silently he agreed. Aristides was like a rabid dog who needed to be put down.
