Alvatores is not all that busy. Usually, the place is packed. I have to say because it’s only four in the afternoon. I wanted an early dinner for a reason. I wanted to give my wife a break from having to cook, but I also don’t like being surrounded by a bunch of people I don’t know. I’m fine when it’s my club, other than that, I like my space.

I carry Rose into the restaurant and we settle into a booth. I placed Rose next to me in her car seat carrier while Cole sits next to Carmen. We waste no time ordering. Then we do the placemat games with Cole. It feels good for it to be just the four of us out together. I love moments like this. My family is my greatest joy. My father pops into my head. I shove it back down. This time is for us.

Our pizza comes just as we finish the games on the placemat. I serve out slices and told Carmen to dig in. Then cut Cole’s up for him in smaller pieces. We eat and carry on a light conversation. I announce we are stopping for ice cream on the way home. Carmen gives me a look. She knows something is up. I just smile and make a joke. I don’t want to spoil a fun time with bad news.

By the time we finish eating, the restaurant starts filling with the dinner crowd. We pack up the leftover pizza and leave. I drive us to the ice cream shop. Cole and I both get a cone while Carmen ordered a sundae. Rose wakes up as we walk around eating our ice cream. We search for the nearest bench. Carmen was right, she has no problem breastfeeding in public. I’m not sure I like it, though. I don’t want some perv getting off on seeing my wife’s breast.

Eventually, we get back home. Carmen gets Cole into bed while I change our daughter’s diaper and put her into pajamas. I then rock her in the rocking chair, hoping she might fall right back to sleep. I still have to have a talk with my wife before morning.

“I’ll take her. Cole wants to say goodnight to you.”

“Okay.”

I get to the door. “Blake, when the children are sleeping you need to tell me what’s up.”

“I will.”

“Does it have to do with Chad?”

“Maybe.”

I say goodnight to Cole, then I sneak out to the front porch. I light a cigarette and puff away. I am dreading telling my wife I’m leaving. She is going to be very pissed at me. I have no choice, I need to dig into my parent's so-called accident. If my father is alive, I have to find out where he is. I need to know. My mother deserves to know.

“Do you remember when I lit a cigarette in your house?”

“I do. You were a handful.”

“I was not. You were a jerk.” I laugh and then I look her in the eyes. “Okay, I can’t take it anymore.
