Raine sunk into deep wet sand, the earth weighing down each step and making her legs burn. Her red heels dangled from her backpack. It was a good thing sheâd taken them off or she would have broken a leg by now.
A long piece of seaweed tangled around her leg and she pitched forward. Jordan reached for her, but she hit the sand with her knees and then her hands.
"I hate the beach," she muttered.
Jordan hefted her to her feet. She brushed her hands together in an effort to remove the sand, but it stuck to everything.
"I could use a shower." She pushed the sand from her pants as best she could.
"Jordan?"
A tall long-legged female in a pair of shorts and a sports bra jogging toward them.
Jordan glanced at Raine and then stepped toward the female. "Hey, Michelle."
The female smiled and hugged Jordan, kissing him. Raine bristled and shifted her backpack. Jordan hugged the female and then pushed her away.
"Whereâve you been? The Prideâs been missing you."
Jordanâs gaze travelled to Raine and then back to Michelle. "Iâve been pretty busy these last few months."
"Yeah, you always have been a lone tiger." Michelleâs words dripped from her mouth as her hand slid down Jordanâs arm.
A possessive jealousy raced through Raine. She stepped up to Jordanâs side. "Hi!" She gave her brightest smile. "Iâm Raine, and you are?"
"Oh, sorry," Jordan muttered. "Raine this is Michelle, a pridemate of mine. Michelle this is Raine."
Michelleâs gaze skimmed down Raineâs body. It didnât take her long, Raine was pretty small.
"Hello," Michelle replied. She moved to Jordan and ran her hand down his arm. "So anyway, itâs been a while. When are we going to get together again?"
Raineâs façade gave out. She turned in disgust and stomped toward the water.
"Hey, I got to go," Jordan said.
"Jordanâ" Michelle called.
Stomping through the sand made Raine's legs feel like she'd been mutated into a dung troll.
Jordan caught up to her. "Sorry about that I justâ"
"Itâs fine. Itâs not like weâre dating or anything. You have a right to be friends with your pridemates or anyone you want to."
"Raine, it isnâtâ" Jordan stopped and grabbed her by the arm. A sly smile crept over his face.
"What?" she huffed.
"Youâre jealous."
"No, Iâm not!" She continued her trek toward the end of the pier.
"You are. Youâre jealous that I slept with her."
She stopped. "You did?" She hadnât meant for her voice to come out so small.
Knowing that a person you might have feelings for has slept with someone in the past, is different from seeing that someone with her mile long legs and tan skin and shiny hair. Raine suddenly wondered if this was how Jordan felt every time he'd seen her with Gabriel.
"I did." He folded his arms over his chest. "I've been with most of my female pridemates. Itâs something that weâre encourged to do. To see if weâre compatible."
Her heart thundered so hard she thought it might burst from her chest and fall in the sand. "You never told me that.
