CHAPTER NINE

I stood in front of rows of pretty dresses, frustrated. I adjusted the towel around me, looking for something simple to wear. I wasn't going to a ball—surely, there had to be something sensible I could wear. I walked along the edge of the clothes inside the closet, and in a corner, I noticed some brown leathers.

Fighting clothes.

I'd worn those when practicing sword fighting. Not only were they thoroughly unfancy, but it was exactly what I needed. There was no way the werewolves could get mad at me for changing.

I slid on the gear, and then went over to the vanity and pulled my hair back into a ponytail. It was so long and would get in the way while running, and especially if we needed to fight the witches. I went back into the closet where I'd left a sword before the last time I'd been in there.

It fit perfectly into the sheath. I went out into the hallway and glanced around. Larus wasn't anywhere in sight. I leaned against the door. Maybe I had gotten ready too fast. It was more likely that he got caught up trying to find something. Maybe they had run out of something they usually kept on hand.

When I had lived in the castle, it seemed like someone always needed faerie dust and unicorn horn flakes. I knew how to get those from the source. I just needed a metal brush to scrape the unicorn horns. That was one of the things Larus had taught me in the short time I'd been there.

I listened for footsteps or conversation nearby, but heard nothing. It was tempting to find him, but he was expecting to meet me in my room. I went back inside and sat on my bed. A wave of homesickness ran through me. I wished I could stay, but at least the queen had promised me to keep the room as I'd left it.

When I'd first arrived, I was a mess. On one hand, I'd been saved from certain death. I'd been languishing in beds for so long, it was strange just to be walking around. But the power and energy I felt from becoming a vampire took everything to a whole new level.

Also, I'd never seen anything like the castle. Everything was huge. Beautiful. Sparkling. It all appeared new despite being thousands of years old. Beyond that, the people—vampires—were gorgeous, too. And they wore magnificent clothes I'd never even been able to dream of before.

To make things even more challenging, I felt everything on extreme levels—excitement, fear, worry. Then I was introduced to Larus. I could hardly hold in my feelings. Not only had I never had the chance to fall in love before, but had I been human, the emotions would have been so much weaker. I don't know how I managed to hold myself together.

At least now I had the benefit of experience. Though my feelings were still extreme, they were at least under control. I'd gotten used to them and could rein them in, even if it took a little work.
