If you took an honest look at your life, do you feel you are successful? Take a moment and really think about it. Now consider a follow up question. Why or why not? Some of you may say it's because of the job you have, the car you drive or where you live. Some may say it's because of family, the clothes you wear or the stuff you have. If you're paying attention, you might notice I've not said this is a reason you're successful, because some may give similar answers for why they are not.
If you asked me this question at this moment in my life, I'd honestly tell you that I don't feel I am. The reason for this is a little complicated. I have a roof over my head, food to eat, money to pay bills and transportation to get me where I need to go. Some would say that, in itself would make me successful. None of these things are mine, however. Brandy pays the bills and keeps our household going. I spend my days doing God's work, or at least I'm supposed to.
I say I'm not successful because, at the moment, I don't think I'm serving Him very well. I'm not writing with the intensity or frequency that I used to. My health is fine but not great, and I'm not very disciplined in my behavior. Often times I am selfish and stupid.
That may seem well and good, but a lot of us try to fake it, In other words, we pretend we are successful even though we aren't. When I was a kid, my mom and dad spent a lot of money to keep up appearances. My mom, my brother and I always had nice clothes to wear. Michael and I also had plenty of toys and games to play with, too. Even as a teenager, I never wanted for much, and when dad complained about finances, I wrote it off has him being conservative. The truth, however, is that they lived well beyond their means, and it caught up with them in a big way. Dad spent the last half of his life struggling to stay ahead, and it wasn't until he passed that mom was finally able to get out of debt.
A lot of us live in a similar way. The reason for this is that we judge our success by what we can see. If I see someone driving a fancy car, I assume they have money. I think it's safe to assume that a lot of others would think the same thing. In truth, however, the owner may be living beyond their means, too. Eventually, something will change and the truth will come out.
At one time, I used to have a huge video game library. I wasn't heavy in the trading in titles like many players are. I liked having a large library, but a day came when I asked myself the difficult question. Why bother? I had a closet full of NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 and classic Xbox games I hadn't played in a long time.
