More frugal thinking with your grocery choices eventually leads to you questioning many buying decisions. Much of what we buy is a result of advertising, which subtly and not so subtly separates us from our hard-earned cash.

Here’s an example. In my life I have purchased three toasted sandwich makers. The first was when I first set up home – Mum and Dad had a toastie pie maker and I thought it was an essential item for the kitchen. Over time this got wrecked and replaced. Then George Foreman advertised his grill, which was no more than a glorified sandwich maker, so I rushed out and bought that too. I was really pleased with myself, I recall.

Where those appliances are now I don’t know – we have shifted a few times since then. Anyway, the point is you can make a perfectly fine toasted sandwich in a frying pan – either electric or stovetop – without the hassle of trying to clean an intricate appliance afterwards. Those toasted sandwich makers probably owe me around $350 and at the end of the day will finish up cluttering up a landfill. It is just one more thing we think we need in lives already full of unnecessary appliances. Who would have thought a limited grocery budget would make me realise that? Of course that thinking does not end with toasted sandwich makers: you name it and someone has made your life ‘easier’ by designing an unnecessary appliance – popcorn maker, cupcake machine and icecream maker are some examples that spring to mind. Did you know you can buy a meat marinator? Or you could just use a bowl!
