CHAPTER 21

JADE

It was going to be impossible for Jade and Sal not to touch each other all night in the close confines of the hollowed-out space in the giant tree. Even pulling her feet back and resting her chin on her knees while she sat on the floor, their shoulders were only a foot apart. Part of it was because Sal was so tall and broad-shouldered. Jade did not consider herself a petite woman by any standard, and not too many women or even men towered over her, but Sal seemed able to do that. But is it because of her giant presence rather than her actual stature? Jade wondered. There was never an instance where Jade thought the phrase “larger than life” was more appropriate than when describing Salishan Bransen.

“You’re staring,” Jade heard Sal say and it made her jump when she realized she was caught doing exactly that. I'm certain I’m not the first woman to be captivated by this ex-space ranger, she thought. She still felt herself blush, especially when a smirk played across Sal's face.

“I was wondering if there is anything in that duffel bag to eat,” Jade said hoping to cover the attraction she knew was evident on her face.

Sal shrugged. “Help yourself,” she said nudging the bag closer toward Jade. “I imagine there are emergency rations of some kind in there, although I can't promise they will taste good.”

“I can deal,” Jade said not liking the implication she was not adept enough at survival to look past bad tasting rations. “Nothing like a little dehydrated space food to fill our bellies.” Jade reached for the strap and pulled the bulky bag onto her lap. The space inside the tree was even tighter, but she refrained from sliding closer to Sal.

Opening the zipper, she looked inside and found a couple of foil packets marked as edible. She held one up for Sal, but the woman shook her head. Instead, she pulled the knife from her belt and began to whittle slivers from the mushroom she plucked off the bark of the tree.

“No thanks,” Sal said with a shake of her head. “These are better on an empty stomach.”

Jade frowned. “Do you want to explain those to me a little more?” Jade asked. “Particularly, before you eat one.”

Sal chuckled. “I told you already. This is called Angel’s Fire, and it makes you relax.”

“Relax?” Jade asked.

Sal raised an eyebrow and gave her a sly smile. “Exactly,” she said. “Relax. And frankly, since we have nothing else to do at the moment, chilling out is a perfect option.” Then her eyes shifted and met Jade’s. There was a hint of something in them which made Jade's stomach tighten.

Is that desire? Jade wondered. Why do I suddenly feel like I'm prey? Involuntarily licking her lips, Jade held perfectly still as she waited to see what Sal would do next. After a beat, still keeping eye contact, Sal lifted a tiny piece of the mushroom with her blade and popped it into her mouth.
