I sat down on the couch in the office at Chateau Falco and let out a long, weary sigh. The mansion was eerily quiet. Then again, maybe it was normal and the day had been so loud and chaotic that it sounded strange now to not have dozens of kids screaming and arguing back and forth. It reminded me of when I once attended a loud concert for a few hours. After leaving, the sudden lack of noise had been so absolute that the silence felt like a profound physical presence—resulting in a persistent yet faint ringing in my ears.

I reached out to Falco, recalling her temperamental assistance over the last few days. Miss me, old girl?

The mansion’s sentient Beast remained silent, although I could still sense her. I frowned pensively.

Kára reclined on the armrest beside me, leaning on one elbow as she toyed with my hair. Aiden stretched his hands high overhead and let out a loud yawn before collapsing onto a chair and leaning his head back as if to fall asleep right there on the spot.

Transporting the students at Shift had taken longer than even I had anticipated. Close to five hundred students had been on the roster—a number far higher than I had realized—and Tory had even hired more faculty to boot. Served me right for not looking into the budget I received every month. Well, someone received it. Likely Ashley Randulf or Othello 2.0. Once a week, I was lobbied with sweet words, vague assurances, and a glass of fifty-year Macallan that never seemed to empty as one of the vixens encouraged me to sign here, here, and here until I couldn’t see straight and fell asleep at the desk.

So, I’d learned a lot about Shift in the past few hours since we’d left Camelot. Tory had hired two or more shifter adults of almost every persuasion she could find—gorilla, panther, lion, wolf, coyote, and even a rhino couple. Those teachers had organized the students into Families—kind of like classes—to both receive their general education as well as the particulars of their flavor of shifter.

That chaos in the gymnasium during the attack had been under the supervision of these teachers, so it was rather obvious that Tory needed even more help. To that effect, Gunnar and Ashley had already been sending a dozen or so werewolves on rotation to the school to act as substitute teachers, chaperones, and hall monitors.

Long story short, the place had already been a powder keg waiting to explode without the inciting event of the Winter Fae abductions and the wizards’ attacks. Moving them to Fae was actually a godsend, because from what I’d heard, the school was now a total loss. Especially with Tory preferring Fae.

I was still suspicious of the Winter Queen and the family drama she was involving me and Tory in, but the solutions were solid and made the most sense, given all other variables. The kids needed a place to stretch their legs without getting into
