Peter Pan and Wendy

Madigan never ceased to amaze me. It was his unswerving focus on whatever task he set his mind to that made him unstoppable. I clung to his neck with one arm, and kept my telescoped cane tight to my chest with the other. Though it did nothing to actually shut out the world’s chaos, I closed my eyes, fearing the unknown.

“I can still see you,” a deep, male voice echoed in my mind. He had a heavy French accent, and a malicious delight in his tone. The reverberations and the calm cadence told me the phantom dude wasn’t fussed that we were fleeing. He either didn’t want us, or already had us, and our flight was laughable to him.

A shudder ran through my body, but stranger was the growl and shudder that simultaneously ran through Mad, as well. “Did anyone else hear tha?”

“Don’t answer the voice, whatever ye do!” Lugh shouted. “Don’t talk back to him. It’s the Nain Rouge. Once he’s got ye, he’ll never let ye go!”

“Nolan, run closer to me. I don’t want nothing aiming for ye.”

“Aye, brother. I’ve got your back. Ye can lead the way.”

Bastien was frantic. “He’s in my head! He’s saying there’s a way to cure Rosie. I have to go to the main city in Éireland to find the Curcuma Longum plant. Is he telling the truth? Is there a chance there’s a cure for her blindness?”

Lugh was adamant as his boots pounded through the snow. “We’ve got Kerdik, Bastien. If a plant could heal her, we can just ask him for it. The Nain gets off on chaos. He wants to take everything good about Faîte and tear it to pieces. Anything he says, put it out of your head. And whatever ye do, don’t answer him!”

“You’re sure?”

“I’m sure. I was alive before the Nain was captured. He’s telling me to shoot an arrow through the wolves right now, because one of them’s a spy for Dother.”

Both my wolves howled their indignation at being slandered so maliciously. “We’ve done no such thing! We gave up everything for Rosie, so she could free Éireland from the Were curse.”

I hurried to assure them that I knew who they were. “I know, guys. I know you’re not spies. That’s ridiculous.”

“Link’s not dead,” Mad chanted to himself. “Link’s just fine. Link’s safe and sound with his Quinn. Link’s grand.”

“Link is alright,” I confirmed. “He’s probably off telling ridiculous jokes and charming the pants off of Quinn right now.” The Nain Rouge seemed to be tapping into our grave fears and desires, which made him all the more dangerous. How does the Nain even know Link’s name if he’s never met him? I tried not to freak out at the mind-reading, but breathe deeply while Mad ran with me in his arms through the snow.

“Aye. Say it again,” Mad requested, and I knew the Nain Rouge was getting under his skin.

“Faster!” Lugh urged us. “Run until we can’t hear him anymore. He’s… It’s all lies!” Lugh shouted, as if telling himself along with us.
