THE LUCKY ONE

ERIN

Sunday Night

“They’re trying to outflank us!” Zach cries as he pounds buttons on his controller, randomly shooting into the forest on the TV screen.

“Calm, my padawan. We’ve got this,” Trek reassures as he and Country methodically take out all the enemy soldiers sneaking up on them.

When they’re all dead, Zach collapses back on the couch. “Phew. That was a close one.”

Trek shakes his head. “Nah, we had it covered.”

“I’m taking Ned out,” I call, not sure they hear me as they’re now engrossed in discussing strategy.

After grabbing a flashlight I slip out the door, and Ned and I make our way outside then down to the lake. While he runs around, sniffing at everything, I pick my way along the shore until I make it to one of the benches and sit down.

Ned half-heartedly noses around for a couple of minutes before he gives up and lies down with his head on my foot.

There’s a slight breeze coming off the lake as I peer across the dark water.

When Trek and I got back from sailing, we found Finn and Stitch had gone to town and got us some ribeye’s for the grill. They decided it was their turn to cook, and I have to say, the simple dinner was delicious.

They even had a cherry pie and ice cream for dessert.

Stitch is another of Finn’s team members who showed up while Trek and I were out sailing. He brought me a Forsaken Aces ‘Property of Trek’ cut. I have no idea how the hell they got patches that quick. When I asked, they just grinned and shook their heads.

I’m supposed to wear the cut whenever I’m in the bar. That will certainly get the town talking.

I jolt in surprise when Finn suddenly appears and sits down next to me.

“I swear I need to put bells on you guys,” I murmur, and he laughs.

“You’ll get used to us,” he says. “You okay?”

I shrug. “As good as can be expected, I guess.”

He nods, probably figuring that’s as good an answer as he’ll get.

“Trek talk to you about taking the manager’s job?” he asks.

“Yeah. You really think other MCs will target the Cove?”

He nods again. “I do. I’ve already fielded a couple of calls about it.” He settles back, stretching his arm around the back of the bench behind me. “There’s been a lot of smuggling along the northern border and through the Great Lakes. Established places like Savage Cove that are still family owned and out of the way are hard to find, so yeah, I think there’s going to be a lot of interest in it. By us claiming it now, we’ll save you from others trying to take over.”

“By taking it over yourselves,” I point out, my voice wry.

His lips twitch as he shakes his head. “We’re just establishing a presence here, not taking over completely. You still own it.”

“‘Completely’ being the operative word there.”

He lifts his shoulders. “It is what it is, Princess. Besides, you love us and you know it.
