Days until Christmas—Three

Dave and Luther turned up early, and try as I might, I couldn’t get a hold of him on the phone. Thankfully, he said we could all fly back with him and Luther. So, everything is set. I’ve got the flights booked, and Kat’s going to be so excited.

I’m walking down Main Street, humming to myself when Addy, Jonas’ woman, blocks my path.

“Hey, Dane, Merry Christmas.”

“Hey, Addy, Merry Christmas.”

“Did Jonas tell you what he did for us for Christmas?”

I grin. “Nope, what did he do?”

“That man, I swear he’s the kindest, most thoughtful man I know. He booked a family holiday for us to Disneyland. And you should see the place he booked for accommodations. So nice. I feel truly blessed.” The woman’s so happy, she’s glowing.

“Where’d he book?”

“It’s right near the park… The Hotel Devine.”

My stomach drops, and I feel like cement is churning in my gut. That’s the hotel I’d booked for my holiday. So much for Jonas getting cheaper accommodations.

Addy misreads my face and gushes. “I know, right. How sweet is he?”

“It’s kind of expensive…”

“I know, but he’s paid for it. So, I thought, what the hell, we deserve it.”

Addy’s grinning from ear to ear when I say, “Yeah, he’s a peach. So, where is he?”

“Oh, I’ve left him manning the desk at the motel.” Addy points across the street.

“Think I’ll drop in and say hello.”

“Tell him I won’t be long.” Addy practically skips away, and I’m left standing on the sidewalk wanting to kill someone. To my left is the local jeweler. Stepping in through the door, I walk in and whatever the sales lady sees on my face makes her take a step back while her hand flutters to her throat.

“Hello,” I say while attempting a smile.

The woman gives me a nod but seems even more nervous.

“Dane! How goes it?” asks the owner, an elderly man named Clive.

“Good, thanks. I’m looking for something for my wife for Christmas.”

“You’re leaving it a little late, aren’t you?” asks Clive.

“You have no idea.”

“Okay then,” replies Clive rubbing his hands together. “Necklace, earrings, bangle, or…”

“Yes, to all of it.”

“Matching?”

“That’d be good.”

“Come over here.” The man opens one of his cabinets and pulls out a chunky silver necklace with matching earrings.

“Needs to be more delicate.”

“Right,” Clive pauses then looks to his saleslady.

I glance at her, and she says, “What about the shipment we haven’t put out yet? The new range?” She doesn’t look scared of me anymore, her eyes are now twinkling with excitement.

I look back at Clive who’s frowning. “Which piece?”

“Let me go look. I’m pretty sure there’s a Najo necklace with matching earrings and bracelet. It’s gorgeous!”

She disappears behind a door, and I’m left alone with Clive.

“Got plans for Christmas, Clive?”

The older man shakes his head. “Not this year. All the family are doing their own thing, and it doesn’t include this old guy. But that’s okay, at least I have the day off.”

“Clive, I’m not taking no for an answer. Come to the clubhouse. Bring anyone else you’d like.
