I look down at her and shake my head. She honestly has no fucking idea just how special she is to me. Not only that, but she’s a hero. She served our country bravely and with honor and even though she suffered horrific injuries when the plane she was in went down, she protected her dead comrade and held off the enemy until she was rescued. I know she’s blocked a lot of what happened out. At least, that’s what her dad told me and based on her blasé attitude, I tend to believe him. “Sashy, you’re a fucking hero, baby.”

“Not really. All I did was my job, Trick. And you see where that got me. An anxiety-ridden, hates-to-leave-the-house, broken mess.”

“You’re my mess, Sash, and all I see is beauty when I look at you.”

She glances at me and grins before saying, “I think perhaps you’ve gone blind from sniffing all the smells at the kennels or something.”

She’s always been able to make me laugh and her latest comments have me throwing my head back and giving into the hilarity of the situation. “Love you, Sashy,” I whisper, kissing her temple.

“Love you, too, Trick. Doesn’t mean I don’t think you can’t do better, especially now.”

“Are you kidding me?” I’m about to continue when the waitress appears with a tray holding our food. I wait until she’s got it on the table and then continue, lowering my voice so only she can hear me, “I’ve been waiting for-fucking-ever to have your legs wrapped around me as I show you just how much you mean to me.”

I watch the blush cover her cheeks and can’t hide my smirk. We may have held off going all the way because of her commitment to the military, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t mess around quite a bit once we got older. I’m still not sure how we were able to abstain, since any time I touched her, I wanted her in every way possible. “You’re gonna be mine, Sasha Nicole Clemmons, and that’s all I have to say about that, y’hear?”

“Still bossy, I see,” she mutters, but I see the grin that has her lips tilting up. Lips that I can’t get enough of, but now’s not the time or the place.

“Where you’re concerned? Always. How are you feeling now?” I ask. She seems calmer and I don’t know if it’s the medicine she took, Mico, or me.

She bites her lower lip as she seems to think about my question. “Better. I still don’t like being around all of these people, but I don’t feel nearly as jittery as I did a little while ago.”

“Good. Now, let’s eat because I want to get you over to the kennels. I wasn’t kidding when I said I was going to put you to work.”
