Chapter Seven

“Find a safe place for it. If anyone were to find out, you have that...”

“They would come after her for sure,” Ethan said, panic clear in his voice.

I ran full speed to the upstairs hall. I went into my room. Moving a certain book on a shelf caused a picture to move. I entered the combination to the safe and put the dagger inside. After securing everything back into place, I went downstairs for yet another history lesson.

“We are impervious to almost everything. Fangs can mark another vampire until their healing abilities mend the skin, but it cannot penetrate it. The only thing that was rumored to be able to pierce our skin or cause our death was a dagger. It comes from The Sacred Sword Karasuma, to be exact. It was said to be forged into the dagger by Nakata Tatsuya once the sword had been destroyed in battle. These are just rumors. No one seemed to know for sure. Many a vampire has been hunting for it.”

“How in the world did it end up in the local weapons shop?” Celia asked.

“That I don’t know. It sounds like something we might want to explore.”

“You mean your clan.”

“No, Trinity. No one outside this room can ever know you have that dagger.”

“You really think your clan would turn on you over this?”

“I don’t want to find out.”

“You two get packed. We leave for the clan house in the morning.”

Ethan and I looked at one another and then headed upstairs. I had time to open my closet when I felt someone behind me. I turned around to find Dad. He had a strange look on his face.

“Are you ok?”

“I want to apologize to you,” Dad said, putting his hand on my shoulder.

“For?”

“I had to know who I could trust.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your new dagger— “

“Yeah?”

“It’s not— “

“The dagger is a lie?”

“No, the rumored dagger exists. It’s just not your new one.”

“Dad!”

“Trinity, I will be by your side, but I have to know if I can trust them to keep you safe.”

“So, you're fine with putting my life in danger!?”

Dad’s gaze turned to the floor. He closed his eyes for a moment and then turned his attention to me again.

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

“So, not only do I have some psycho vampire wanting to kill me to hurt you, I might also have your clan trying to kill me as well. That’s just great. Thanks so much.”

The snide sarcasm dripped from my words, but I didn’t care. If Dad could use me as bait like this, maybe he was no better than Micah. As much as I wanted answers, I needed to keep myself safe. I had to come up with my own plan for this, but I also needed protection. I needed to find that dagger.

“So, where is the rumored dagger now?” I covered my mouth and scanned the room. “Never mind, if one of them is a spy—”

“I sent Celia and Ethan to get information about the owner of that shop.
