They had ridden hard all day and well into the night in the hopes of reaching Custen shortly after sunrise. But after three days with very little sleep and a lot of hard work, Rhen was at the end of her energy. Her eyes drooped as she tried to keep her focus on the empty desert around them. When her chin hit her chest for the fourth time, she was ready to admit she had possibly taken on more than her small body could handle. Even the cool air surrounding her did little to keep the much needed sleep at bay.

The gentle squeeze to her hip however, was enough to snap her eyes open, and fire to course through her treacherous body.

“Maybe it’s time we stopped for the night. You’re falling asleep and I’m pretty sure this machine can’t operate itself.”

The light caress of Amira’s breath on her ear did more to her senses than the cool air of the desert ever could. After a few moments to gather herself following that unexpected reaction, Rhen finally blew out a shuddering breath.

“We don’t have time to stop. The sooner we reach Custen, the better.”

“You need to sleep.” Amira countered in concern.

Rhen shook her head, as much to deny that fact as to keep herself awake.

“I can sleep after we have the copper tribe’s support.”

She felt Amira shake her head and Rhen was sure the other woman had her perfect eyebrow arched.

“We won’t be able to get that support if you fall asleep and crash this infernal contraption.”

Making a show of looking around the dark landscape, Rhen did her best to glance back at Amira. “Crash into what? There’s nothing around.”

The hands tightened on her hips as Amira shifted to look around as well. “Point taken. But you still need to steer this thing. If you fall asleep we could go off course. That could take up more time then stopping for a few hours of rest.”

Rhen hated that Amira was right, but she stubbornly refused to admit that to her.

“I won’t fall asleep.” She stated firmly, willing it to be true.

But after a few more miles of monotonous barrenness, her eyes grew heavy once again and her head began to nod.

“Yes, I can see you’re very alert.”

Amira’s taunting words jolted Rhen awake again.

“Why do you sound so sarcastic?” She grumbled as she tried to get her bearings. She could hear Amira’s eye roll as she answered.

“Your head was on your chest. A blind man could see you fell asleep.” Then Amira’s tone turned uncharacteristically gentle. “Stop the mount and get some rest, Rhen. You’re no good to anyone like this.”

Rhen let out a heavy sigh. “You don’t seem to understand what’s at risk if we don’t get help for my tribe soon. The sipa will have no remorse wiping them from the face of Rukan. My tribe may not think I’m of use to them, but right now I’m their only hope for rescue. I can’t fail them.”

For a few moments, nothing but the sound of the hyena’s motor filled the silence of the desert.
