TORI RODE SAXON in a slow circle around Michelle and Tank Girl in the round pen. Tank Girl was in full bridle and saddle, staying stationary despite keeping a keen eye on Saxon as he walked by.
“Okay, ease into a trot and let’s see how she behaves,” Michelle said.
She gave Saxon a nudge with her heels, and he sped up into a slow trot. Tank Girl pivoted to watch him, but Michelle kept her from moving any further.
“She doesn’t trust him,” Ashley said, watching from just outside the pen.
Tori sped up her trot. “He’s a gelding, what’s he going to do?”
“A dude’s a dude,” Ashley said, and Tori laughed, not expecting such insight from a bisexual woman. Then again, Ashley was full of the unexpected. When Michelle asked for another rider for today’s lesson, Ashley offered Tori’s services instead of riding Apostle herself. Things were different after the hike.
Saxon lengthened his trot, relaxing into the exercise as she completed another circle around Tank Girl. Michelle urged Tank Girl into a slow walk in the opposite direction around the pen.
Tori’s newest cuts itched. Ashley had acted like a nurse in training, cleaning out the dirt from the bark before taping another gauze pad on her. If this kept up, Tori would need to buy her a new first aid kit.
She hadn’t cut herself at all since then. In her less-honest moments, she told herself it was because it was nearly Christmas, and she had no school and no responsibilities besides barn work and pizza delivery. Giving Ashley a quick glance on her way by, she knew that was just an excuse. Every morning when she got dressed and every night, she remembered where her pocket knife was and that was enough so far to keep her in line. Hell, she hadn’t even had a drink all week.
“Okay, bring him back down to a walk and let’s see if she’ll walk beside him.” Michelle and Tank Girl made a narrow inner circle around the pen while Tori slowed Saxon and reversed direction. As she approached them from behind, Tank Girl flattened her ears and tried to kick Saxon with her back legs.
“That’s not very nice.” Michelle turned Tank Girl in a tight circle until she calmed down and started listening again. “Let’s try that again, only this time I’ll walk her up to Saxon.”
Tori signaled Saxon into a slow walk, keeping to the outer edge of the pen. Michelle and Tank Girl approached from the rear and this time, Tank Girl behaved herself, riding beside Saxon as if it they were best buddies.
“Now she likes him,” Ashley said.
“A chick’s a chick,” Tori said.
Ashley laughed. “We both know chicks don’t always go for the dudes.”
Tori wasn’t bothered by the innuendo since everyone at the stable knew about her and Robyn. The only people she wasn’t out to were her own family.
Michelle ended the lesson, and Ashley led her horse back to her stable. Tori took advantage of the empty round pen to canter for another few minutes before taking Saxon back to his stable for a groom.
