arrives in Madison on July 4th. More dates to be announced soon! “Aki, why does the sign say that we will come to Madison when we are here already?” Akeno proudly held up one of many signs plastered around the capital and grinned like a kid bringing home his first work of calligraphy.

“Because we are now clowns for the Americans! Aki and Akeno Matsumoto have lived here for some time, but ‘the Fast Swords of Nippon’ will arrive today to entertain the barbarians. Are you happy?!”

Akeno looked at his shoes. “No, but Aki, think about the money. The man at the church was so nice too. Besides arranging for the show, he introduced me to Dr. Alfreds, so now we have the show, and I have a job.”

“Sweeping the floors at the doctor's office.” Aki was taken aback when Akeno suddenly shoved him. “All that matters is money. Had I thought like you back in Tokyo, I would never have worked for O-Hana. You barely made enough money as a teacher. You received respect, but who paid for the rice and charcoal?”

“You worked for and under O-Hana.” Aki regretted the words as soon as he uttered them.

Akeno grabbed his brother by the shirt. “I did it for you! O-Hana was good to me, to us.” Was O-Hana bad? She was a peculiar sensei to me.

Klara watched the mirror samurai. They are arguing quite often these days. It has to stop. If they want to continue living in our house, they need to pay again very soon, and I won’t let Akeno be without shelter. “Mr. Hanover is an honest businessman. Everyone knows his huge family were originally harnessers, but I bet in a few years, they’ll run a big circus. Who knows? If you two become famous, their road show may start even sooner.”

Aki was not amused by Klara’s enthusiasm. “I am not a showman like Mr. Hanover. I’m a samurai.”

“You’ll be a performer just for a couple of days, Aki.” Akeno tightened the hakama by wrapping the straps around his waist and tying them and reached over to straighten Akeno's shirt.

It was the first time Klara had ever seen the brothers in their native dress. They wore short, traditional black jackets over their White Western shirts, because their kimono had not yet dried in the suffocating humidity, and dark grey striped hakama. When Akeno secured the weapon at his side, Klara said, “You told me that samurai wore two swords.”

“We do, but I sold them before coming here.” He turned to Aki who slipped a letter into this sleeve.”

Akeno punched his brother's arm, “Who is the letter for?”

Aki replied in Japanese, “Just a report to the doctor who lives in New York, the one Konrad usually writes to.
