MY CELL RANG. “HELLO,” I answered.

“Cam, it’s Ella.”

“Well. Where did you run off to?”

“I had something I had to do. Can you meet with me?”

“Of course. How about my boat?” I said.

“No, I want you to come to my office, alone. Don’t tell anyone.”

“You’re being mighty mysterious. What’s up?”

“I’ll tell you when you get here.”

“Alright,” I said. “I’m about fifteen minutes away. I’ll see you then.”

We hung up and I called Jack. “I’m going to meet Ella. I just wanted to let you know.”

“Where?”

“I can’t tell you. I promised her.”

“I don’t think I like that. It could be some kind of a trap.”

“Yes, it could be,” I agreed. “Or maybe she just wants to be alone with me.”

“Don’t flatter yourself. Are you forgetting she just ran away from you?”

“Anyway, I’ll call you afterward.”

“Be careful.”

I arrived at her office ten minutes later. There was a Harley parked in the lot. No one else seemed to be there. Did she ride a Harley?

I didn’t like the looks of the situation, so I eased my gun from its resting place in my belt and went to the door. Just as I was about to knock, it opened. Ella was standing there.

She took a quick look behind me and said, “Come on in, hurry.”

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

“Yes, fine. I just don’t want to take any chances.”

“Is that your Harley?”

“No, it’s mine,” a voice from behind me said.

I whipped around with my gun extended. I was met by another gun only inches from my nose.

“Who are you?” I asked as I lowered my gun.

“She’s my daughter,” Ella said.

“She’s a little unfriendly, don’t you think?” I said.

“Rachel, put the gun down,” Ella said.

She hesitated and then lowered the gun.

“What’s going on here?” I asked.

“We need to talk to you.”

“Fine,” I said. “That’s why I came.”

“Sorry, Mister Derringer,” Rachel said. “Just being cautious.”

“Shall we sit?” I said. My legs were a little weak.

“Now, what’s this about?” I asked.

“How did you know someone was trying to kill me?” Ella asked.

“I don’t think anyone is trying to kill you.”

“You said you thought someone was.”

“I did think that. Now I don’t. Someone is trying to get to you in the hope of getting closer to someone else.”

Then it dawned on me and I looked at Rachel.

“Why would someone be after you?” I asked her.

“I don’t know. Where did you get your info?”

“From an informant. I can’t give you a name.”

“Brittany? Allison? Dodge?” Rachel said.

“No, I don’t know any of those people.”

“How about the FBI?” Nicole said as she walked in from the adjoining office.

“Well, the gang’s all here,” I said.

“Cut the crap, Cam. I know Robin told you about all this.”

“She might have filled in some of the empty spots.”

“I’m going to tell him the truth,” Rachel said. “Then he can decide if he’ll help us.”

She told me the whole story. A young girl was assassinated. Rachel was being framed for it, and they didn’t know why.

“You’re a part of the group, aren’t you?” I asked Rachel.

“The group?”

“Yes. Where you get ‘called up’ as a teen.
