Samantha felt like an ant entering the vast dining hall for lunch. Warm noonday sunlight poured in through the tall windows beside the doors. Two long rows of either hot or cold food lined the wall with openings where cafeteria workers were coming and going. The wall opposite the front doors had tables with room temperature food, like fresh fruit, breads, and baked sweets. Burgundy velvet tablecloths covered every surface.

Angie and Samantha filled their plates and went to sit at an empty table. The tables were all long and rectangular with eight chairs each.

“Hey, hummingbirds,” Meela said, sitting next to Angie. Miranda took the next seat over.

“Hey, swans,” Samantha said.

“Oh my gosh.” Meela glanced behind Samantha and then turned around to roll her eyes.

Samantha looked back and saw Amber, the flirt from open house day. Amber came around to sit on Miranda’s other side.

“I’ve been looking for you everywhere,” Amber said. “Meela, will you please hook me up with your cousin?”

“Listen, Amber,” Meela pointed a hand at her. “He’s not into you, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“Well, what’s he into?”

“Speaking of being into guys,” Angie said softly to Samantha, “what did you think about the ones from the pool?”

Meela slapped her hand against the table. “Girl, sign me up for a date with that Liam guy any day of the week.”

“I already have a boyfriend,” Samantha said.

“What?” Jonah asked, coming around to sit across from her with Mark following close behind. “Did I just hear Samantha say she has a boyfriend? Is he going to school here, cause I gotta give him a hard time?”

“No.” Samantha laughed. She noticed a few teachers moving around the room talking to students.

“Do you have pictures of him?” Angie asked.

“Of course.” Samantha snapped all the good photographs of him with her phone the day Carlisle bought it for her and used the photo editor to lighten the shadows around his eyes. They almost looked perfectly normal now, with only a hint of darkness surrounding them. It was safe enough to show them off.

She had to unlock the secret pictures folder, where she kept images she didn’t want her mom finding. Once she’d pulled up the first picture she held her phone out to Angie. Meela and Miranda leaned closer to her while she flipped through the images.

“He’s cute,” Meela said. “What’s his name?”

“Everett.”

“Are you guys at the Eiffel Tower?” Miranda asked when Angie slid to a picture taken looking straight up into the tower.

Angie slid it to an image of their view of the city from the second floor next. “That’s definitely Paris.” Neither Everett nor Samantha were in either one.

“Yeah, he took me there a few weeks ago,” Samantha said with a sigh. “It was magical.”

“Really?” Angie handed her back the phone. “He sounds amazing.”

“He is.”

“Samantha and I were thinking about walking to the mall after lunch if anyone wants to go,” Angie said. “We just have to sign out and back in with the security guard at the main gate.
