Randomness is the spice of life, or so they say.

Not sure who ‘they’ are, but perhaps there’s some wisdom to it. The night before we planned to leave Columbia, Paxton made a spontaneous comment about how we ‘missed’ stuff in Peru, where we started this vacation. In any other family on any other trip, the parent would have been all like, ‘well you should have said something back then, it’s too late now.’ Me? Not so much. There are two kinds of parents who would say yes to their kid wanting to go back to an international destination on the spur of the moment, especially after being there already.

Parents who have more money than sense… and parents who can teleport.

It’s not like I’m spoiling Paxton here. She’s only asking about it because she knows it’s not a big deal for us to go wherever we want. If I had to shell out a couple thousand bucks for airfare, she wouldn’t have seriously suggested we go back to Peru.

And why Peru again? Well, she wants to see the Nazca Lines. Admittedly, I totally forgot they were a thing.

Tammy’s initially in full eye-roll mode about it, saying who cares about some graffiti scratched into the desert? Paxton points out these line drawings are so huge they need to be seen from the air. This, of course, gets Tammy replying with ‘then why bother?’ Pax reminds her that Mom can fly, which gets a nod of acquiescence from Tammy.

Yes, my life is bizarre.

After a few minutes of old ‘emo Tammy’ being unimpressed, new ‘faerie Tammy’ seems to take over. Her attitude shifts on a dime, and now she’s all about what kind of magical explanations might underlie these massive line drawings. Allison brings up the idea that ancient people in the area might have had contact with aliens. There are people out there who believe these enormous drawings in the desert sand served as ‘runways’ for UFOs. Not that she’s a believer in that theory, merely introducing it to our conversation as ‘something people say a lot.’

Paxton’s googling produces some articles from a researcher who tried to make a scientific argument that all religions (leaning toward religions practiced by ancient civilizations) came into being as a result of contact with advanced aliens that humans mistook for gods. Paxton reads from her tablet, sharing a story about when the Spaniards first made contact with indigenous tribes somewhere in Central America. As the story goes, one of the tribesmen threw a spear at the Spanish expedition leader—who had a plate armor cuirass on—and the spear bounced right off him. Consequently, the natives thought the Europeans to be gods.

No idea if that’s true or if it’s written by someone trying to make the indigenous people sound primitive.
