“That’s Great-Great Uncle Archibald,” she said. “He was a sea captain.”

I was impressed despite myself.

Ralph and Regina’s parents came in, wearing all black and looking like spies. They always did, but now I wondered if that was also what secret zombie-werewolf hunters looked like. I wondered if they would teach me how to be a zombie-werewolf hunter.

“Children!” trilled their mum. “So lovely to have you all over! It’s been absolutely ages since Ralphie and Reginie had friends over. And we so love having company.”

“Glad to see you all survived . . . ” Their dad paused and I took a deep breath. Did he know that we’d been down in the basement? “. . . our recent camping adventure!”

I let out my breath.

“What did you get up to this afternoon?” said Mr Zinkerman.

While I was thinking of the best way to answer this, my stomach let out a loud growl. I hadn’t eaten anything since the cookies earlier in the day and I was suddenly starving! Being a zombie-werewolf hunter was hungry work.

I coughed to cover the sound of my growling stomach. But I also wondered if we were going to actually have dinner or if we were just going to sit around the fancy table.

But then a man and a lady, both wearing uniforms, came in carrying platters of food.
