Chapter Twenty-One

Gael awoke slowly, awareness filtering in bit by bit, pulling him from the darkness he’d slipped into. His throat was dry. Parched. He wished he had something to ease the ache. Limbs heavy and sore, he could barely move from the bed. Lucid memories slipped in and out of his consciousness. He remembered the injection, feeling so blissful that nothing could touch him. Having sex with whores. Etienne killing them. His fangs piercing his neck.

Was this what it felt like to be a vampire? He was thirsty but it was water he craved, not blood. More than anything, he felt as if he had a raging hangover.

Cracking open an eye, he immediately closed it against the brightness. Trying a second time, he gingerly lifted his lids enough to keep his eyelashes protecting his eyes from the light.

He was back in the room. The one Etienne had been keeping him in. Hands untied, he was lying naked on the bed.

“Ah, you are awake.” The vampire’s voice cooed softly from his left. “Are you hungry, mon amour? I have something for you.”

Gael flinched when a body was pushed down onto the mattress beside him. A pair of frightened green eyes stared into his, immense, wide, and unblinking. The boy was young. Barely out of his teens but already a sex slave. He’d spent yesterday getting passed around and fucked as one of the party favors.

Etienne’s hand pressed the boy’s head down, tilting it to the side to bare his neck.

“The first time is always a little messy but do not be embarrassed. Drink. Grow strong.”

Leaning up on his elbows, Gael winced with discomfort. “I’m not hungry.”

The look of anticipation that had been written all over Etienne’s face melted into a frown. “That is impossible. You should be ravenous. The neck should be torn open, and you should be feeding.”

Releasing the slave, the vampire grabbed Gael’s chin, staring into his eyes. Whatever he saw, he didn’t like.

His lips twisted in fury.

“Non, non!” Etienne hissed, his blue pupils morphing into the unnatural golden hue of a predator. “I drained you to the point of death! I gave you my blood! You should be as I am! How can you not be a vampire?”

Fury danced in his eyes. Gael shrank away, remembering the lash of his anger centuries past. He had always been volatile. A force of nature. Facing Etienne’s wrath was like standing in the path of a tornado. Destructive and unstoppable.

Reaching across, Gael nudged the boy off the bed. He rolled off the mattress with a squeal and hit the floor, out of the line of fire, leaving Gael to receive the brunt of Etienne’s malice.

The hold on his chin slid down to grasp his neck, rough and choking. “What trick is this? Are you immune to my bite? You think this will stop me from having you?”

Gael tried to shake his head, his hand rising to grip the vampire’s wrist. “Non, I do not know.”

Lips rolling up, Etienne bared his fangs. “I will have this little problem fixed, no matter how long it takes.
