The ride to Rhys and Blair’s house is quiet. I can’t believe she lied to me about something so huge. I asked her if she had enough, and she said she did. How the hell could she lie to me?

I’m tense by the time we pull into the driveway and climb out of the car. It’s dark out now, but the large white house is lit up inside and out. Charity stands and stares for a moment. “This is where Rhys lives?”

I nod, as I start toward the door. “Yeah. Blair is loaded.”

She doesn’t move to walk with me, and I turn to face her, seeing the distressed look on her face. “He’s married to a rich girl?”

Rhys, Logan, Quinn, Mya, Christian and Charity were all street kids from the city. They didn’t grow up with anything, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out they don’t trust people who have money. I get it, having grown up with next to nothing. “She’s cool, Charity. I promise.”

She still looks horrified, staring up at the large house.

“Come on.” I turn around again, heading for the front door. This time, I hear her following behind me. I ring the doorbell, and moments later, Bree answers the door. The kid is cute with her wild hair, untrusting glare, and ripped jeans. She’s like a young-girl version of Rhys. “Hey, kid. Where are your parents?”

She lets us in and points up the stairs. “In the guest room at the top of the stairs.”

I nod and can’t resist ruffling her hair as we pass by. She shoves me and then flips me off, but I don’t miss the small smile on her face.

I lead Charity toward the stairs as Bree closes the door and walks toward the living room. I’ve only been here a handful of times, mostly holidays, but I’m sure I can find the guest room.

“That’s their kid?”

I nod. “Yeah.” I smile. They adopted her out of foster care. With Bree and the guys being at the shop all the time, I’ve grown fond of all three. “She’s tough, but she’s a good kid.”

Charity seems to soak in this information in a daze until we reach the doorway of the guestroom. Then she rushes past me and inside the room. “Oh my God, Christian.”

He doesn’t look good and is lying on the bed with cuts and bruises all over his face and arms. His nose is definitely broken, and both eyes are black and blue. “What the fuck are you doing here?” He glares at his sister, and it’s immediately clear this isn’t a happy sibling reunion.

“I’m so sorry.” Charity moves closer to the bed where Rhys is standing perched with his bigass arms folded over his chest. “What happened?” She looks like she wants to embrace him, to hold him to her and never let go, but she doesn’t move any closer.

Christian continues to glare at her, so Rhys answers, “He left work, and four guys jumped him right as he got to his car.
