Chapter 13 - Mickie

I’m so embarrassed, I don’t even know what to say. I’m a Capricorn so I rarely show my emotions unless I’m at my breaking point, and that guy’s comment tipped me over the edge. When Scott picks me up, I’m grateful because I can just hide my face in his shirt. He walks over to Harley, grabs her keys, and carries me to the car. I feel so bad he has to leave his welcome home party because I lost my shit, but I really just want to get out of here.

He opens the door to the car and gently sits me inside. I’m still super embarrassed and, after that kiss, I’m ashamed for him to know about my previous relationship. Hell, I’m embarrassed about it. How could I have been so stupid and weak? I let someone manipulate me to the point where I almost lost everything, and now I have this kind man who’s interested in me. I sit in the car silently with my eyes closed because this isn’t something that I want to talk about. For the first five minutes of the drive, we sit in silence, and then Scott clears his throat. I stiffen a little and wait for him to kick me out of his house. After meeting his ex, and after that whole situation, he probably thinks I’m a crazy bitch.

“Well,” he begins with a chuckle. “That was an interesting party, to say the least. I know you probably don’t want to talk to me about what you said back there, but I just want you to know one thing. After everything you’ve been through with your family and your ex, I think you’re one of the strongest women I’ve ever met in my life. Even when I saw you in that holding cell, I could see the strength that you possess and have nothing but respect for you. I know for the next few months, you have other things to focus on, like your pregnancy and regaining custody of your daughter. However, I want you to know that I want you to be my girlfriend, and eventually my old lady. I want to help you raise your kids, and be a family.”

I’m shocked. I open my eyes and look at him in surprise. He wants to be in a relationship with me? He wants to help raise my kids, too? I’m speechless, and my lack of response must make him nervous.

“Look,” he rushes. “I’m not saying I want you to jump into my bed tomorrow. How about you take the time to think about it over the next few weeks or months, and we’ll see how things go?

I nod and close my eyes again. I realize that I’ve had a super emotional day and I’m exhausted. Scott turns the radio on and sets the volume low while I slowly drift off to sleep imagining a life with Scott and my children.
