This dining room design proves that you have to look in more than one place to create a space. The chandelier is a family heirloom from Rosanne’s husband. Beneath it is a farmhouse table that Rosanne spotted at a second-hand shop whose proceeds go toward helping homeless families find housing. Of course, looking for the perfect piece can take time, but it’s worth the wait. Until she comes across the perfect dining room chairs, these metal folding ones bought at a garage sale will work fine. The wall sconces, found at the ReBuilding Center, are a great reminder that salvaged pieces aren’t always old—these were new, lying in a pile at the rebuild center. Rosanne drilled a hole in the back to create a sconce, removed the lamp canopy, and gave it a modern look with an exposed Edison-style bulb. The fantastic orange metal pieces at the end of the room were once used in a car-mechanic shop. Rosanne found them at Seek the Unique, another of her favorite shops in Portland. Above the orange cabinets are some fun chalkboard frames that I created from Goodwill finds during one of my visits (step-by-step instructions for the project can be found under “chalk picture frame” on the DIY NETWORK online).
