“Gio.” My eyes widened in shock as he opened the wardrobe doors with a flourish. I had been right to suspect that it wouldn’t be my clothes inside. It was jam packed with brand new clothes; their delicate colours and luxurious fabrics screamed money. “Gio, this is too much.”

“Nothing will ever be enough for you.”

I could feel him hovering at my shoulder. Not touching me but close. It was almost like he could feel my discomfort. Idly, I touched the silky material of a dress. It slid between my fingers. It was the kind of dress that I had always dreamt of wearing. The kind you saw models and actresses wearing on a summer’s day.

Had. I had always wanted to wear a dress like that. But that was before. Lately I felt more comfortable with my jeans and t-shirts.

“That would be perfect for today.” Leaning around me, he plucked the hanger from the rail. Holding it out to me, he waited for me to take it from him. I couldn’t. All I could do was stare at the dress in his hands. It was comical because I was scared of taking it from him. it seemed to hold some deeper meaning for him.

“Don’t you like it, Keeley?” His face fell. I was hurting him by not taking it and I never wanted to do that.

I plucked it from his hands, throwing him a smile. “It’s beautiful. They all are.”

He beamed. “I think I thought of every occasion,” he mused.

“Gio. I can’t accept all of this; it's too much.” And it was. His lavish gifts were making me uncomfortable. I was grateful, but it had occurred to me that Gio was remaking me into the woman I used to be. At the very least he was trying to. The clothes were just the start of it. I wanted to tell him that I wasn’t her anymore. I hadn’t been that Keeley for an exceedingly long time, but the words wouldn’t come.

“It's not nearly enough, Keeley. And anyway, these are just for special occasions.” He started to rifle through the array of colours hung in front of us. “Dinners, and formal occasions. And dates. I want you to feel as beautiful as you look to me when we are out in public. And there’s some underwear. I didn’t know your size. So, I guessed.”

I stopped him with a hand on his arm. “You bought me lingerie?”

“It's not all the kinds of stuff you are imagining, Keeley. Some of it is everyday stuff.”

“Gio, when did you even have a chance to do all of this?” Between the clothes and the almost instant way he had found me somewhere to live, I was beginning to feel even more uneasy.

He didn’t answer me. “You can wear your own clothes when you're home, alone.” His eyes bored down on mine. “But I would like you to look nice when I am here. I don’t mean you have to be dressed up sexily,” he added, catching my startled look.
