57. Rome. Exterior. (Day.)

Some ‘Epicureans and Stoics’ are seated at tables at Caffè Rosati on the Via Veneto. (Rome is, by analogy, Athens.) They argue among themselves ironically and with great energy, drinking coffee.

‘Who is this new guy who goes around Athens, do you know anything?’

‘He’s someone from Tarsus. A Pharisee.’

‘But civis romanus.’

‘Yes, he operates fully in the spirit of the Atlantic Pact.’

‘And what does he say? What does he say?’

‘Well, he talks about a certain Jesus and his resurrection!’

‘My Jesus!’

Other intellectuals are seated at the Caffè Rosati in the Piazza del Popolo. Even there the question is debated, but with much calm and detachment and with all deserved scepticism.

‘What does this windbag mean?’

‘It seems that he announces foreign divinities …’

‘And yet it would be interesting to hear him … Let’s organize a debate, a press conference, one of these things …’ (The one who speaks, one doesn’t know why, is almost angry, perhaps with himself, perhaps with the chronic lack of organization among the … Athenians. On the other hand, he speaks with a southern accent.)

‘To the Areopagus?’

‘To the Areopagus!’
