“None of Pruitt’s men were caught, boss. They all got away. But so did the Stuart woman and her bodyguard. Pruitt is furious.”

“Pruitt is a fool. Sit tight and wait for my next instructions.” Mitchell Cochran disconnected, barely resisting the urge to fling the burner cell phone across the room. That little cockroach, Dave Pruitt, couldn’t get anything right. His need for vengeance overruled rational thinking, and the moron actually ordered an armed assault on the Stuart estate. The media was in a frenzied hysteria.

Mitchell had been studying OASIS, searching for ways to trip them up and bring them down ever since they’d had the audacity to interfere with his vengeance on his traitor of a daughter. The Iceman would have snatched her up with no problem if it hadn’t been for OASIS operative Reeve Buchanan. He and his coworkers ruined a perfect plan, and Judith — or Jessie, as she called herself now — had gotten away without paying the penalty for her betrayal. Even now, she was on her honeymoon with Buchanan, living her life as if she were beyond retribution.

She wasn’t.

Both she and her new husband would be made well aware of that in time. Mitchell was formulating a new plan of revenge. The details were still in flux, but no matter what plan he settled on, it would involve a great deal of pain and humiliation for them both. In the meantime, he was going to put an end to that intrusive investigative agency. Reeve and Judith never would have escaped without the OASIS team.

Toward that end, Mitchell had been the one to tip off Pruitt about Fitzjames being responsible for Tommy Pruitt’s arrest, although he’d strongly hinted that Fitzjames was a cop, not a private investigator. Mitchell hadn’t wanted Pruitt nosing around OASIS.

When Pruitt had called Mitchell in a fury about having to leave his penthouse, Mitchell had been tempted to hang up. It was the idiot’s own fault for letting Fitzjames escape. As Pruitt had continued his raving and demanded Mitchell do something about the kidnapping charges, Mitchell had bitten back his laughter. Pruitt seemed to think they were a team. Equals, even. The worm had no idea what a ridiculous notion that was.

Mitchell had no equals.

But the mention of Erienne Stuart had put a different spin on things. Having vanquished just about every corner of the financial arena, Mitchell was eager to make a name for himself in the scientific and pharmaceutical sectors. So far, the results of his efforts were small potatoes compared to Stuart Enterprises.

Mitchell had long been looking for an opportunity to bribe or blackmail his way into that company. But while Marcus Stuart was a fierce businessman, he was also a frigging saint. Not even that internal scandal with the pension fund was going to leave any lasting harm since the do-gooder had replaced every cent of the embezzled money.

Over the last few months, Mitchell had been following Stuart Enterprises’ progress on biofuels. Their CS180 looked especially promising, and if they were successful with it, Mitchell would be left eating Stuart dust once again.
