Chapter 18

The group in Emma’s office had spent the last fifteen minutes comparing notes from the interviewees and now they all sat and stood around more confused than they had been.

“So, barring the odd little chink here and there, they’re all singing from the same hymn book,” Emma said.

“That seems to be the case,” Mya replied.

“You don’t think these could be learned responses in case anything like this ever happened?”

Mya shook her head. “No. To be honest, it’s the little inconsistencies that give them more credibility. How one person can perceive something slightly different to another can tell you a lot. If they were all reading from a script, that wouldn’t happen.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean their descriptions about the base they visited to the north of Edinburgh where they received their orders and provisions when they first arrived up here. They were coordinating with a guy called Landry, who was a sort of proxy for Olsen. What they said about the compound differed from person to person ever so slightly.”

“Surely that’s something for us to be concerned about.”

“No. Think about it. The rooftop garden in the hotel next to ours in Glasgow. How many raised beds were there?”

“Twelve.”

“Fifteen,” Andy called out.

“Weren’t there ten?” asked Ephraim.

“Exactly,” Mya replied. “We all remember things a little bit differently. When you’re learning something parrot fashion from a script, that tends not to be the case.”

“Okay,” Emma replied. “So, we think they’re telling the truth. Where does that leave us?”

“Well, we know where the base is. We’ve got a pretty good idea of how it’s laid out. The one thing we don’t know is how many personnel there are because from everything we’ve been told, more groups were travelling up from down south and”—she turned to look at Seri, Darren and Ed—“obviously, Olsen was sending a contingent down too.”

“I’d say not knowing how many people are there is a pretty big knowledge gap. Wouldn’t you?”

“Yes and no.”

A ripple of concerned murmurs ran around the room.

“How can you say that?”

“It’s not how many are there now or in an hour or in five hours. It’s how many are there after we’ve drawn them into Edinburgh centre.”

“You haven’t exactly been clear about your plans for that,” Emma replied.

Mya cast a look towards Mike and he took over. “The idea is to create a massive diversion in Edinburgh centre that draws the vast majority of them in after us. Our people can then stage a raid on the place. From everything we’ve been told, there’s a huge amount of food, weapons, ammo, and fuel. It could tip the balance. It could set us up properly, give us a real fighting force.”

“I don’t like the idea of heading back to Edinburgh either,” Griz replied, “but the guy I spoke to said it was like Santa’s grotto. Ashford had already sent a convoy of supplies and weaponry up from Shoreham as a goodwill gesture to Olsen and her forces. Christ knows what’s there now.”

Emma exhaled deeply. “You know where this place is?” she asked Seri.
