The last few months had been a big shock to the system, not just for Beck but for all the people who had moved up from Skye with him. Gone was his small military force. Gone was the possibility of over fourteen hundred more soldiers joining them. They were just left with the reality of being citizens. There was nothing left to officiate any longer.

They had been afforded the luxury of slightly less cramped living conditions than the others. Shaw had given Beck, Trish and their children the small cottage that was once his. He was now a permanent resident of Jenny’s guest room.

It took some getting used to for Les and Darren not to be permanently following the prime minister around. However, they had become indispensable as trainers for the militia, more than adequately replacing Vicky and some of the others who had travelled to join Barnes. Even though Vicky had returned from the north some days before, she had not resumed her training duties, bowing to the skill and experience of the two former military men.

Doug’s talents had been put to work with Ruby as keepers of the supplies, and the rest of the staff that had come from Skye were employed wherever there was a need for them to be used.

Beck and his devoutly loyal secretary, Mel, worked together in the hospital with Trish, Liz and the nursing staff. They were little more than fetchers and carriers, but away from Westminster and Whitehall, their skill set was limited.

“Penny for your thoughts,” Trish said as she walked up behind her husband. Beck had been looking out at the small back garden, but now he turned and a small smile lit his face.

“You’d need a lot more than a penny for my thoughts,” he said before letting out a long breath.

“That was a big sigh,” she said, wrapping her arms around him and perching her chin on his shoulder, staring out into the garden too.

“I was just thinking how quickly things can change. It wasn’t that long ago that I was trying to recruit these people to go on a crusade to take back the country. And now we’re charity cases, depending on their kindness just to survive.”

“You’re all light and happiness today, aren’t you?”

“You did ask.”

“It’s true. I’ve only got myself to blame.”

He turned and kissed her cheek before looking out into the garden once more. “I don’t suppose I can complain really. There are billions dead and we’re still here. We’ve got a roof over our heads. Our girls are safe and even going to school of sorts.”

“Exactly. And, y’know, we have got it pretty good compared to a lot of people. That roof over our heads is actually a house, not the tin can that some are living in. We’ve got a garden. We’ve got water coming out of the taps rather than big plastic bottles that we have to fill every couple of days.”

“You’re right. I know you’re right.”

“Y’know, I was thinking that maybe we should give back a little more.
