CHAPTER 12

When Jenny walked into Jules’ cottage, her friend was already waiting in the hallway with a rucksack on her back and a rifle on her shoulder. “Jen?” Jules said, a little surprised. “I was expecting a lift, but I thought it would be George or Em.”

“Darling, let’s go into the living room,” Jenny said as she guided her friend back down the hall. Meg kept a respectful distance behind them, sensing sadness in the air.

“You’re scaring me,” Jules replied, allowing herself to be guided across to the sofa. She winced a little as she sat down. Although her bullet wound had almost healed completely, she still experienced sporadic discomfort when sitting, crouching or standing. She leaned the M16 against the side of the arm and shuffled the rucksack from her back. “I’m guessing this is it. I’m guessing this is Olsen. What is it? Are we surrendering or something?”

Tears filled Jenny’s eyes as she sat down next to Jules and took her hand. “They blew up the East Ridge.”

Jules slumped back into her seat as she felt Jenny’s hand close tighter around her own. “Blew it up?” A shuddering breath left Jules’ mouth. She already knew the answer, but she asked it anyway. “My brothers?”

“We haven’t been up there, but one of our scouts told us it had been reduced to nothing.”

For a moment, there was silence. Jenny looked towards her friend expecting tears, expecting something, but she just sat there, her eyes growing wider, staring towards the fireplace. “But I was going to make another batch of chilli.”

“What, darling?”

“It’s Jon’s favourite.”

“Jules … sweetheart.”

Tears suddenly began to flow in torrents down Jules’ face like a dam had burst. She bent forward, wrapping her arms around her stomach, and started to rock back and forth. “They can’t. They can’t leave me. They’re everything I’ve got. They’re all I’ve got.”

“I’m so sorry, darling.”

“Tell me this is some kind of horrible joke,” she said, straightening up, taking hold of Jenny’s hand once more. “Tell me it’s a joke. Don’t worry, Jen. I’ll forgive you. I’ll forgive you; just say you're kidding me. Please. Please tell me that it’s a joke and everyone’s in on it and they’re going to walk through the door. Tell me,” she said as still more tears flooded down her face and onto her jeans.

“Darling, I’m sorry.”

“No, Jen. No. Please tell me. Please tell me it’s a joke, please.” She collapsed sideways, her head landing in Jenny’s lap as she cried and shivered and shuddered.

“I’m so sorry.”

“They were all I had left.”

“No. You’ve got us. You’ll always have us.”
