The fear in the air was electric, and even though they were out in the open and they could see the sky and breathe the cool air, the forest that lay on both sides of the road instilled a feeling of claustrophobia. The discovery that the RAM that had attacked was Caroline did not stay a secret, and frightened chatter began to spread up and down the line.

All eyes scoured the trees for more movement; all hoped they would see none. The march had come to a standstill, and now there was only one question left to be answered.

“Mike? Mike? Have you heard a word that’s been said?” Emma asked as the others looked towards him.

Mike looked at her then towards Shaw, Raj, Talikha, Jenny and Tabby. Shaw had convened a very quick meeting to decide whether they should carry on or turn back towards the hotel. “We carry on,” Mike said.

“So, it’s unanimous,” Shaw replied. The six of them headed back to the front of the line. There was no further discussion; they continued along the road and the others followed.

The procession carried on with Shaw, Raj, Talikha and Humphrey leading the way. A gap of a few metres had formed between them and the others. “Are you alright, my friend?” Raj asked, looking across towards Shaw.

“Struggling a little with my leg, that’s all. Cooler weather always makes it worse.”

“That is not what I meant.”

Shaw’s eye twitched a little before he answered. “You saw Mike when we were talking?”

“Yes.”

“He’s somewhere else right now.”

Raj cast a glance over his shoulder. Emma, Tabby, Jenny and Meg were all side by side. Mike was close to the verge as he walked along. His head was down. His eyes were staring at the road. “Maybe he is just tired. It has been a stressful time for everyone.”

“No. I’ve seen that look before. Something’s going on in there, and I don’t mind telling you, that scares me to death.”

“He has never let us down before.”

“No he hasn’t, but he’s had plenty of meltdowns before, and if he’s choosing now for another one, we’re going to be in big trouble.”
