“What’s all this about, Mike?” Emma asked.

The centre wasn’t exactly a hive of activity, but enough people had been awoken for tired mutterings and rumours to be abound. Rather than heading straight to the former PM’s office, where everyone was undoubtedly awaiting their appearance, Mike had led Emma into the kitchen, where they now looked at each other in the light of a lantern. “I need you to hear me out before you flip.”

“All the best conversations start like this. I can’t wait. Go on.”

“Mya came to see me while I was on lookout duty.”

“Okay.”

“She said that there’s no need for us to go by road to Glasgow. We can sail right into the heart of it. She said that we could pretty much hop off the boat within spitting distance of Hope Street.”

Emma didn’t speak for a moment. She just stared at her brother. “I think I’ve already figured out why you asked me not to flip before you finished.”

“Maybe I should have started at the end and worked my way back,” he replied with a weak smile, and Emma let out a small laugh too.

“I haven’t been able to think of anything else since that meeting,” she admitted. “We’re screwed every which way. If we don’t do something, we’re going to wither away and die. There’s a good chance that whoever goes down there isn’t going to come back and we’ll still wither away and die. But if they succeed … then there’ll be something that looks like a future.”

“Exactly. I thought you were going to rip my head off.”

“I hadn’t thought about sailing down there. That actually gives the whole thing an air of plausibility. Rather than being a billion-to-one chance, it’s much more like a million-to-one chance this way.”

It was Mike’s turn to let out a small laugh. “See. I knew I’d bring out the optimist in you one day.”

Tears began to fall down Emma’s face. “There’s no other way, is there?”

“Well, there is. You, me and Sammy could go off now, just the three of us. We could take a satchel of food and head further down the coast. We’d survive … just the three of us. We’d live. We might even find a new settlement.”

“And we’d be leaving our friends to die.”

“Pretty much. But they’d have the same options, the same chances. A few of them would survive. Wren, Robyn, Mila. Mya, Jules and her brothers, Darren, possibly Vicky.”

“And the others?”

“Not everyone can fight, Em.”

“We have to protect them, don’t we?”

“We started Safe Haven. We founded it with a view to looking after people, with a view to making sure no one went hungry. The community looked after everyone and vice versa. It would be the easiest thing in the world to look after ourselves. It’s what people have been doing since the dawn of man, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing. It doesn’t mean it’s the decent thing. Before the outbreak, society was more polarised than ever. But we built something amazing in Safe Haven.
