TWELVE

Damon

“She went home, in case you were wondering.”

I had been home long enough to take a shower and eat a late dinner before I stepped foot into the living room. I’d just barely noticed she was sitting there when the sound of my sister’s voice and the words she said had me stopping in my tracks.

Though I heard her clearly and knew exactly what she was attempting to communicate to me, I still replied, “What?”

“Avalon. She went home today.”

Pretending not to be affected by simply hearing her name, I returned, “That’s good. It means she’s healing.”

Morgan laughed, but it wasn’t because she was feeling genuine happiness. Her laugh was filled with disgust. “You’re unbelievable.”

Yep.

I was.

And I knew I deserved every ounce of what she was handing me right now.

Despite that, I said, “Excuse me?”

My sister shook her head. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing, Damon. She was in the hospital for nearly a whole week. How many times did you go and visit her?”

“Twice.”

“Twice?” she fired back, her brows shooting up.

I nodded. “Yeah. I went once with Royce and Nixon, and I went again with Magnus, Brix, and Liv.”

Morgan’s head moved up and down as she took in my words, and I could see the look of disappointment written all over her face. “That’s such bullshit.”

So, I thought I knew where this was heading with my sister. Maybe I was wrong. “No, it’s not bullshit. I went and saw her twice.”

“Oh, I don’t doubt that for one second, Damon,” she assured me. “But it’s absolute bullshit that you could only manage to visit the woman who saved your sister from an uncertain and horrific fate by only visiting her twice in the company of others.”

Yep.

I did that, and I knew precisely what I was doing when I did it. If I’d had my way, I probably wouldn’t have gone at all. But I couldn’t keep avoiding doing it, either. It would only lead to something like this.

Apparently, my visits to the hospital were enough to satisfy everyone but my sister.

“I can’t control everyone else who goes to visit her,” I noted.

“No, but you can control when you visit,” she pointed out. “You can also control how long you stay. And if everyone else had visited and moved to leave, you could have stayed with her. You didn’t.”

I threw my hands out to the side. “I’ve been working, trying to locate the asshole responsible for this mess.”

“Nobody else can do it?” she countered.

They could.

Of course, they could.

In fact, all of them had urged me to take some time away, get some rest, and allow them to handle tracking him down. Because while we had apprehended the men in the house the day we rescued Avalon, they weren’t the ones in charge.

I learned, not long after I’d left Avalon in the hospital that same day, who was behind this, and I intended to seek him out. I was determined to make him pay for what he’d done to her, for what he’d done to the both of them.
