A small woman no taller than five-two was escorted up to their apartment, followed by a man a good six inches taller. She was dressed like she was the entertainment at a kidâs party: bright, candy-apple red shirt and a pair of bright red, yellow, orange, and white striped trousers that stopped just above her ankles. Her shoes were orange flats with little fox ears and whiskers on the front of them. She was clutching a bag on one shoulder and a smile that didnât quite fit their situation or the late hour. She was about to introduce herself when she caught sight of Mika. Her smile fell.
She spun around like she was going to leave, but the man accompanying her grabbed her shoulders and stopped her. âHear him out. Director Koh wouldnât have sent us if it werenât important.â He placed a kiss on her forehead and spun her back around. He was dressed in the opposite fashion, black jeans and a long-sleeved black T-shirt that was pulled across a chest that did a lot of weightlifting.
Josh had read about Zen masters, people who could live in the present, their thoughts only focused on the task at hand. The man dressed in black had a mind as clear and clean as a newly opened hardware store. It was a maze of thoughts and ideas, but everything was organized into a practical and relevant space. Nothing was pressing to get to the top or bleed into the moment. His goal was singular: to protect his wife while she uncovered how she could help a woman in need.
âYou know I wouldnât call if it werenât important,â Mika said.
The man dressed in black nodded and they shook hands.
Mika turned around and introduced them. âThis is Dr Dotz and her husband, Mal. They work on retainer with my uncle at ICD.â
How much do they know about our kind? Josh asked Mika.
âTheyâre evolved, too,â Mika said.
Well, that explained the manâs ability to focus. âThis way,â Josh said, as he led them to the bedroom.
Dr Dotz stopped, causing her husband to bump into her. The look on her face was one of disbelief. âWhatââ She took a step forward and sniffed.
Josh invaded her thoughts and was surprised that the Doc was more curious than repulsed. She glanced over at Mika twice, and each time her intention was to say something, but she stopped herself.
Rox intrigued her. She represented a challenge, a shift out of her comfort zone, which was a refreshing change from how she normally dealt with her patients.
âWait!â Josh said. âYouâre a fucking psychologist?â
Dr Dotz nodded like he was only half correct. âTechnically, Iâm a psychological anthropologistââ
Josh turned to Mika. âAre you shitting me? We need someone to surgically remove burned clothing out of her skin and you think this woman is going to ⦠what? Counsel it off?â
Mika held up his hands, but it was the way Mal moved in front of his wife that stopped Josh from continuing.
