BEING AT HOME WITH OURSELVES

We can only offer genuine hospitality if we are truly at home with ourselves. We should think long and hard on the words that St. Benedict uses in Chapter 53 of his Rule on the reception of guests—words such as “stranger”, “poor”, “traveler”, “someone of the household of the faith.”

These words describe us all. We who are poor strangers and travelers in the household of faith must welcome the hospitality offered to us before we can offer it to others.

The strangers that we are need the courtesy of love. The poor that we are need the strength of prayer. The travelers that we are need kindness and thoughtfulness. The members of the household of the faith that we are need understanding and attention. We must not forget that we cannot welcome the strangers, travelers, the poor, or members of the household of faith in others or see Christ in them unless we first welcome them within our very selves—as God welcomes us.

Only Jesus Christ could dare us to claim our identity in the same way we offer hospitality to ourselves first and then to others. What we do in hospitality to ourselves is much less important in the divine scheme than how well we become who we are created to be: living, loving beings in whom the spark of divine life can be clearly seen.

We are living, loving beings privileged by the gift of divine life, won for us by Christ’s Resurrection to claim his name as our own: It is “no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).

So, we must ask, is Christ found in us and is Christ seen in others?
