Wes and I walk hand and hand back into the clubhouse, where we find the guys milling about with Dad and Pike.

“Hey,” Dane saunters over to me, slinging his arm around my shoulder, “where did you go?”

“I went to check on Wes and his mom.”

“She seems to be doing okay, Pretty.” Dane flicks his gaze to where Victoria is laughing and drinking coffee with Jada and Rosita.

He’s right—she does look okay. Better than okay… she looks happy. And none of us miss the way my dad tracks her every move.

“Remind you of anyone?” Dane chuckles, glancing over at Rhett.

His icy gaze catches mine, igniting with a fire that only appears for me. A shiver runs through me as he mouths, “Okay?”

I nod, fighting a smile.

It’s hard to be unaffected by him. By Wes and Dane. Under different circumstances, I’d be walking around with a permanent smile, but having Reapers in our compound makes me feel uneasy.

The guys say we can trust them—that Darren Creed screwed them over too—but they’re Reapers.

So is Dane, a little voice whispers, but I refuse to let that thought linger.

Dane isn’t a Reaper. He’s a Sinner. He’ll always be a Sinner.

“Where’s your head at?” He curls his hand into the hair at the nape of my neck and pulls me close, not caring that we have an audience.

“Nowhere,” I lie. “I’m fine.”

His eyes narrow, but my dad calls him over. “I’ll be back.” He drops a kiss on my head and stalks off.

“What’s wrong?” Wes asks.

“I still can’t believe he’s… a Creed,” I whisper as I watch Dane talk to my dad and some of the Reapers. “He seems so at ease about all of this.”

“Does he? Or is he just really good at putting on a front?”

I glance up at Wes, and he smiles. “That’s very perceptive of you.”

“Takes one to know one. I’ve spent years perfecting my mask, princess.”

My chest aches at his words. “What do you think will happen now your mom is—”

“Let’s not go there. Not today. She’s safe and she’s happy, that’s all I care about. And if my old man finds out she’s here—and eventually, he will—he’d have to have a death wish to go up against the club.”

“Yeah.” My reply is lackluster, because while I want to agree with him, I can’t help but think that this is exactly the kind of excuse Grant Noble needs to come after the club.

Wes takes my hand and leads me over to Quinn and River, and we sit down.

“Guess what?” She beams, looking up from her cell. “Dad just texted me. He’s lucid and giving the nurses hell, apparently.”

“God, Quinn, that’s such a relief.” I rest my head on her shoulder.

“It’ll take more than a couple of bullets to keep him down,” she says, and I flinch at her words.

There’s been too much death—too much suffering. And it still isn’t over.

“What do you think is going to happen now?” Quinn laces her fingers with mine and squeezes gently.

Glancing up at her, I grimace.
