Within the renewed compound Sharia stirred slightly, like a swimmer floating within one of Za’arain’s warm seas. But it was not water that supported and caressed her, it was Kane. She smiled up at him, and her eyes were a brilliance to equal the crystal resting between her breasts. He buried his hands in her rippling Darien hair, and smiled as she delicately touched all the aspects of his timeshadow. Then he laughed richly, a sound as beautiful as a soul-eater’s song. Lias’tri crystals resonated with a music that could only be felt, not heard.

“Well,” said Jode quietly, “it’s about time you woke up.” He slanted a black glance at the azirs glowing by his friends’ side. “Your, er, pets wouldn’t even let me get a thought in sideways,” he added. “And it was such a marvelous dream.” He sighed and touched his dimmed lias’tri crystal unconsciously. “I don’t suppose you’d want to tell me what happened between the time that Dani left Doursone and the moment when one of your azirs appeared to Rizah?”

Kane smoothed his palm down the length of Sharia’s body, savoring the warmth and life he had never thought to touch again. She curled against him even as the meaning of Jode’s words sank in. “An azir?” asked Kane. “On Doursone? When?”

“Three days ago. Two days after Dani reappeared. But I’m not sure my time measurements mean anything. Dani glowed with azir light when she landed on Doursone. She had been in times that she refuses even to think about. And she brought me here in less than a day. I wonder how long it took the azir to get to Doursone,” added the psi-master thoughtfully. Then he saw that neither Sharia nor Kane understood. He swore with odd wistfulness. “I’d hoped that you would be able to explain at least what happened on Doursone. Rizah was dying. I stayed with her, doing what I could because she was fighting so hard to hold onto life. Then out of nowhere one of your azirs just ... condensed. Rizah held up her hands. It opened its mouth and an eerie pale dust poured out. Rizah laughed and laughed. When she could laugh no more, she died.”

“SaDyne’s ashes poured into her hands,” whispered Sharia. “The soul-eater kept my promise.”

“That answers another question,” said Jode. “He’s dead?”

“Yes. Always. In all times.”

“The azirs killed him?” asked Jode curiously.

“No.”

“The Eyes of Za’ar?”

“No.”

Jode hesitated, reading the answer in the violet shadows turning deeply within Kane’s and Sharia’s silver eyes. “I see. And the Eyes themselves?”

As dead as SaDyne. Always. In all times.

Jode looked baffled. He waved a hand to indicate the compound and the rebuilt city of Za’aral itself. “But the psi-packs are gone. Did you kill them even as you killed SaDyne?”

Kane smiled and smoothed Sharia’s living hair. “They’re all around you, Jhoramon. Kiri and Darien, fours and sixes—and soon there will be fives, many fives. Za’arain’s people are changing as all life changes.”

Jode circled back to the one thing that interested him.
