Chapter 7

I awoke the morning following my stakeout of Graves’ place feeling antsy. It had been almost two weeks since I’d started my mission and I wanted it over. It wouldn’t happen if Graves sheltered in place, which he might until he thought whoever was killing off his people had been found and eliminated. But I didn’t believe he’d do that. He had too much to lose. By the time eleven o’clock rolled around, I began second-guessing that idea. Maybe deep down he was a coward. A punk who’d needed three other men with him when he tortured and killed Mark, because he was afraid to take him on by himself.

Perhaps it was time to taunt him? In the information Mark and I had put together were two phone numbers, one for the cell phone he used for his drug dealings, the other for his home. I flipped a coin and called his cell.

It took five rings before someone answered, growling, “What?”

“Danny, it’s me,” I replied.

“Me, who?” he asked. “No name, I don’t talk to you. I’ve got better things to do than play games.”

“A man who has a vested interest in your well-being. I was watching the news and it seems like someone’s taking out your people. I may know who it is. I’ll tell you, for a price. Are you interested?”

“Like I’m going to trust some anonymous SOB who’s afraid to tell me who he is,” Graves shot back.

I chuckled. “Not afraid, merely cautious. I give you my name, you might decide to cut to the chase, grab me, and do nasty things to my body to make me talk. I don’t like being hurt.”

He must have covered the phone because I could barely hear him talking to someone, their words muffled. He came back, saying, “We meet somewhere of my choosing.”

“No, I’ll choose. Somewhere where there’s people around. A lot of them, not only your goons. There’s a bar called Duffer’s on Seventh. Do you know it?”

There was a deathly pause and I knew I’d gotten to him. He wouldn’t admit it though. “I’ve heard of it,” he finally replied. “Before I say yes, I want to check it out. Give me a number where you can be reached and I’ll call you back in an hour.”

“Don’t trust me?” I replied sarcastically. I knew all he saw on his caller ID, from the phone I was using, was ‘blocked number,’ so I gave him the number to the burner phone I’d bought before coming to the city. I’d kept it, just in case, and it had been a good move.

“I don’t trust anyone. I wouldn’t be alive if I did. Wait for my call.” He hung up.

He didn’t trust me and I didn’t trust him, which made us even. I knew he would set things up at the bar to be certain he had the advantage by filling it with people who worked for him. That was fine with me. I didn’t intend to show up inside. All I wanted was to catch him as he walked from his car into the bar.
