Color Coding

According to the NEC’s color-coding specifications, the insulating cover on the hot conductor should be either red or black, the neutral conductor white, and the grounding conductor green. The terminal screws on AC plugs or receptacles to which wires are connected are also usually color coded. The black hot wire is fastened to the brass screw, the white neutral wire to the silver screw, and the green grounding wire to the green screw. Solid copper cable, the type used in most residences, is also used in RVs. It is composed of three insulated solid copper wires in a PVC sheath. The hot and neutral wires are covered with a color-coded insulation—red or black for the hot wire, white for the neutral wire—but the grounding conductor is bare. (Romex is the brand name of a General Cable Company product, but is often used generically for any PVC-sheathed, solid copper cable.)
