Chapter Fifteen

Coop

The flat was silent when I opened the door. No music, no mess, no Tiger welcoming me and no endless chatter. It was perfect, I told myself firmly. Peace, quiet and time to enjoy the luxury of my lovely new home.

I had a Macallan and a cheese sandwich. I didn't regret leaving the lasagne; I wasn't going near the bloody woman again. After the risks I'd taken to keep her alive, she had the cheek to call me a homicidal maniac. It was too much.

Mind you, complete outrage was difficult as I was uncomfortably aware that Spirit had been right: she knew how to keep her mouth shut. When Bullard threatened her, I had assumed she would panic and fall apart, but she was solid.

Still, there was no way I could have known. And as all I'd done was look out for her safety and mine, she had no basis for complaint. And then I remembered whacking her arse and frightening her. Trying to justify that wasn't so easy.

I didn't sleep well. Throughout the night I hovered in and out of dreams, missing the comfort of the slim body curved to mine. I was up at dawn and not exactly in the best of moods.

Almost breaking my neck over the thigh-length boots abandoned by the bed and then finding her tops piled all over my stuff in the wardrobe, gave me an excuse for righteous rage. I swept her gear into two bags and marched down to her place. As I'd warned her, it took a second to pick the lock.

I was seriously tempted to go upstairs and give her the fright of her life, just as a friendly reminder of how vulnerable she was. But as she probably still mad at me, she'd scream blue murder and she might whack me with the bat too.

As I couldn't be bothered with a fight, I dumped her stuff in her kitchen, left and locked the door behind me. It was a subtle and much nastier message. She'd fume when she discovered it. That had me smiling again.

All thoughts of Spirit were chased away by a brisk morning in the lab. Dexter dropped round mid-morning, collecting a shipment of Purple Dragon and dropping off supplies for the next batch of Magenta Rock. It wasn't till he vanished that I realised he hadn't bothered to label them.

Predictably, my call to him did not go well. "I've got bleach here that's unlabelled."

"It's no biggy," Dexter whined. "You can smell what it is, right?"

"Labelling is a safety issue."

"Right, well, if you can't tell what's what, I'll make it easy for you."

The moron. "You do that." I hung up before my temper got the better of me.

Prepping to make batches of Rainbow Vibe kept me busy and then a raft of paperwork for the new safety certificates and permits sent by Jorge arrived, so I did some work under my official job description too. As I completed the last form, my phone rang.

"Hey," Rovero's gravelly voice was easy to recognise.
