Chapter 8
Rift
I looked at Ruth and let out a sigh of relief. I knew it was the right choice.
âWe need to have a good talk with Frank,â I said.
She nodded, but I could see that her thoughts were already miles away. She followed the Santiago truck through Tijuana, but then overtook it and signaled the driver to follow her.
We headed down the dirt road and, once again, I had to admire her strength. Considering everything Iâd just laid on her, I was impressed to see her holding herself together.
She was strong. I had to give her that.
The more I looked at her, the more I realized just how much I loved her. And it pissed me off. I didnât want to love her. Loving her could only bring me trouble.
Shit. Look at where I was sitting right there. In my car, following a delivery truck that was filled with Tecoâs stolen millions. Shit. If that wasnât asking for a bullet in the head, I donât know what would.
âI think we need to tell Frank that you want out,â I went on when she remained silent. âYou need to get out before you get in too deep.â
Still, she remained silent.
âYou know,â I persisted. âYour uncle has dozens of connections. Hundreds probably. Iâm sure he can get somebody else to bring the cash into the States and launder it. Besides, you have no experience in this space. What are the chances that you screw it up?â
At this, she squished up her lips into a grimace, but I detected a vague nod.
I wanted to reach out and set my hand over hers as she rested her hand on the stick shift. I wanted to pull her into my arms and tell her that I would look out for her, that I would protect her.
That I would do anything for her.
But as we got closer to the ranch and reached an open patch of desert, she suddenly pulled the car over to the side.
âWhat are you doing?â I said.
Without saying a word, she got out of the car. I watched her head back to the Santiago truck. For a moment I thought she was simply giving the driver new directives. Maybe she wanted to deal with the situation face to face instead of texting him.
But then she walked around to the passenger side of the truck, got in and pointed at the driver, indicating he take off. He made a tight u-turn and headed back towards Tijuana.
âWhat the hell is she doing?â I shouted.
Rav looked out the back window of the car. âWhere is she going?â
âBitch!â I shouted. âHoly, fucking shit! The bitch did it to me again! She just took off on the truck, leaving us behind.â
âWhat do we do now?â Rav said, leaning forward between the two front seats.
Good question, I thought. What the fuck do we do now?
âShould we go to the ranch to tell Frank about this?â Rav said.
âNo,â I said, finally making up my mind. I opened the door and stepped out, ran around to the driver side door and got in.
