Chapter Eight

Kat

I must have cried myself to sleep.

When I awoke, I blinked out through the window, surprised to see that we were out of the city.

“Where are we?” I asked, my voice croaky.

“Near Lancaster.”

I frowned. “Where’s that?”

“About fifty miles outside L.A.”

I nodded, but I was so unfamiliar with the area, it wouldn’t have mattered where he had said we were. I still wouldn’t have known where it was.

“I don’t know what to feel,” I said after a few moments. “I barely knew him, and I didn’t like the man that he was, but he was still my father, you know?”

“I know. What you felt for him was complicated. I get that. We can’t choose our parents, but love them or hate them, they’re still our family.”

I sighed. “I guess so. Do you have anything to drink? I’m so thirsty.”

“I picked up some supplies at the gas station,” Nash said nodding to the back seat. “There’s some soda, some water. A few bags of chips. Help yourself.”

“Thanks.”

I grabbed a bottle of water then took a long drink.

I felt lost.

I’d complained about my father a lot over the years. God knows I’d resented him, but I never would have wanted him to die like that. I’d spent so many years wishing he could have changed, but, in the end, it was just too much to have hoped for.

In his defense, my father had never hurt me physically and he hadn’t once complained about supporting me financially, either, but ultimately, it was emotional support I’d craved from him most. Affection and love. But those were the very things he hadn’t been able to give me.

“We’re here,” Nash said, turning into a side street and approaching some sort of compound that had a high wire fence around its perimeter.

I leaned forward in my seat and blinked into the darkness.

Row after row of motorcycles were lined up along the fence. Behind them, the doors of a large, single-story building were thrown open and loud, booming rock music blasted out from within.

As we neared, a couple of leather-clad men all but fell out of the front door, followed by women dressed in miniskirts that were so short, I could practically see what they had for breakfast.

“What the hell is this place?”

“An MC Club,” Nash grunted. “Didn’t think it would be so busy at this hour in the night. They must have had a party.”

I looked out at the building again. “An MC club? What, some sort of motorcycle gang?”

“They’re not a gang,” Nash said. “Technically. And, whatever you do, don’t let King hear you call it that.”

“King?” I turned to Nash and stared at him. “Why would you bring me here?”

“Because I didn’t know where else to take you,” he explained. “It had to be somewhere you’d be safe, and I couldn’t think of anywhere you’d have been safer than here.”

I sighed and scrubbed a hand through my hair. I was too tired to argue and there wasn’t a lot I could have said anyway. It wasn’t like I had a lot of other options.
