Chapter Fifteen

Grace

Surprisingly, there was no sex.

Not that I wanted it. Well, I both wanted it and didn’t. That’s the curse of being a woman, wanting two things at the same time. But I guess the fact that we didn’t make love last night showed me that there is more to this, whatever it is that we have.

Those are my thoughts the following morning when I head to the office. Just as I arrive, I notice that Mr. Jennings is already there.

“Grace, I need you to run over to the courthouse and pick up some documents I left there,” he instructs me.

That will take at least an hour to get there, and another hour back. As for in between, that depends on many factors. Suddenly, I get an idea.

“Am I in a rush to return?” I wonder.

He lifts his eyebrow at me. “Why?”

“Well, I was wondering if I could maybe have my lunch break in the meantime, then come back once I’m done,” I suggest.

“I don’t see why not,” he smiles at me.

“Thank you,” I smile back. “I have my phone on me, so if you need anything else, just let me know,” I add.

“I think that’ll be all,” he assures me, then once again, his eyes delve into the laptop screen in front of him, and I know it’s my cue to leave.

That idea won’t let me be. It might not work. She might not be available, especially because she works nights and sleeps during the day. But it’s worth a shot. If anyone knows something about those parties, it’s her.

As soon as I’m out of the building, I call her. It rings several times. Nothing. She doesn’t pick up.

Oh, come on, I think to myself. But I’m not angry with her. I’m actually angry with myself, because I haven’t thought of this sooner. I could have contacted her days ago and set up a meeting.

I try her again, but with the same luck.

Shit. I shake my head at the phone. It’s nine in the morning. Of course, she’s not up. Of course, she’s–

At that moment, she calls me back.

“Julia?” I say as soon as I pick up the phone. That’s her real name, although she told me she uses it very sparingly. I guess I can understand that.

“Is your house on fire?” she asks, sounding annoyed.

“No, just – “

“Then, why would you call two times in a row, when you know this is way too early for me?” she asks.

“I know, I know,” I say as quickly as I can. “I just really need your help with something. Really.” I add that last word to assure her how urgent this is.

I hear her sigh on the other end of the line. “Can we do it later? Like much later?”

“No,” I say. “It has to be now. Please.”

She sighs again, much more loudly, probably with the intention of me hearing it.

“Where are you?” she asks, and I know she still hasn’t agreed.

“I’m heading to the courthouse,” I reply. “I should be there in about an hour.
